Mother nature feeds plants exactly the opposite way -- most of the nutrients are near the surface. They go deep for water, not food.
This is why top-dressing is so effective.
Pot plants don't 'go deep' typically, they go sideways. Some of the healthiest and biggest plants I've ever seen where bottom fed, never top dressed or top watered.

Plants grown from seed have a tap root, which always tries to go deep. Clone roots tend to grow more like an umbrella.
Bottom feeding actually has many advantages (flood & drain). I've done it with cloth pots & had good results.
