Hi there,

I saw those two numbers many times on the internet in marihuana related and also non related sites. I never asked before so even if it may sound like an stupid question for some, could anybody tell me what those numbers mean ?

101 is a beginners course or lesson in a subject...and 420 was made up as stoner code in the 70s...noone knows why for sure, but it caught on somehow and became synonymous for anything having to do with pot...

Read an article in High Times in the late '90's about how it all supposedly came from a few guys in So. Cal. in the 70's who would meet up after High School in some park to smoke out away from their parents. Meet up time and club code was- you guessed it- "4:20"!

"...Roll another one, just like the other one..." :bigjoint:

hmmm, 420 is police code for narcotics. like 187 for homicide and 211 for burglary. but yea, they probably stole the code from a couple stoners from So Cal. that makes sense, if you dont think about it

187 probably wasnt a police code until Samuel L. Jackson made that movie. yea, that sounds right too. i gotta take a shit

You know, ive heard both, about the guys after school, and about the police code.

My problem with the guys from school smoking at 420 is this....

Bob dylans "rainy day woman 12 amd 35" most commonly known as everybody must get stoned...it was realeased in 1966, befor the 70.s
If you multiply 12 and 35 you get 420. Could 420 predate '66 or did dylan make it up? Thats my.theory by the way, not a repeat....:-)

its fucking police code! thats where it came from. people DO know
Jeez hot fuzz, take it easy...do you need those crayons and construction paper we were talking about?

A narcotics violation is code 11500, not 420
420 is no longer, if it ever.was, a police code for narcotics anywhere in america

No one likes the dylan "theory"?

420 started in San Leandro, Ca. It was some high school kids that would meet and smoke that started the phrase, it took of at that high school and started spreading across the bay area. In the 90s (i believe) high times used it one the cover of there magazine, and that's when the saying became a national phenomenon. 420 is NOT police code for smoking out. stay high.

Yeah...a lot of us read the article...if you read the whole thread you could see that 420 predates that, as early as 66 qhere bob dylan uses it(kind of) in his song "rainy day.woman 12 and 35"...so its gotta go back at least that far.

I can say though ita an american phenominon. Not to say its unheard of in other countries, but most aussies and britts I know dont know it has amything to do with weed. Leads me to believe.it is an american thing....and now canadian...

Bunch of stoners were getting high and looked up at an analog clock at 4:20.. "Woah the little hand disappears behind the big hand at 4:20." "Cooool".

That's my guess anyway.

I guess I wasn't the only one that called "Bullshit" on the "420 is police code" post, after I read the rest of the thread I saw a few others had responded too - oh well!

At any rate, about the 101 question! For those of you who know nothing about college courses, 101 is just an "add-on" number that indicates that the course in question is an "introductory" or "basic" course. Whereas a higher number would indicate a more advanced level of subject matter. For example: "Anthropology 101" would be suitable as a student's first course in that subject (and probably a pre-requisit for "higher level" Anthropology courses like "Anthropology 201" (the search for Big-Foot).
