When a plant becomes "rootbound".....

When a plant becomes "rootbound" ,it stops growing......so I have read......

But what does this truly mean?Does it stop vegging / growing in height? or does it stop growing altogether ,no new buds ,no nothing anymore ,until it dies?

I thought plants breathe through their leaves ,maybe I'm mistaken.........anyway........

I asked this question ,because I often see big plants in small cups ,so I thought they must be rootbound and yet.....

YES and wot about the roots.......that's y we like to let the soil dry between watering .......to allow the roots to breath .......y not simply pot up if you think they r rootbound????

I intend to grow in a 0.9- 1gal wide shallow pot ,due to height restrictions......so if I were to choose a strain stated between 50-150 cm......what would be the result ?will it stay shorter than 50 cm and bud before completely dying? I imagine this would be impossible if using a strain stated between 2-3 meters high in such a small pot ,right?
Don't care about max yield ,by the way....

Welcome to riu by the way....and I think you already no that your pot size will heavily influence the overall result of you end product....

yes ,I know :) ,I actually grew a tiny auto(Betty Boo from JD ) in that pot a couple of years ago........the end product was something most of the serious growers would laugh at ,but extremely satisfying for my needs......it's all a matter of how you look at things ,I guess. I did a second grow of the same strain ,immediately after ,with the same results.....and I would do it again ,but I really want to try a different strain for a change.......
I was thinking one of these Short Stuff #1 ,Dinafem Roadrunner ,Buddha White Dwarf ,Short Nepali ,Pixie Punch (or other short strain from Freedom of Seeds) ,Lowryder Chronic Ryder....so far....suggestions welcome:)
As I said ,don't care much about yield ,but I try to look for the least "couchlock" strains.....although I understand that short strains are usually heavy hitting.

any reason you have a preference for auto`s over photoperiod plants?

I used to do photos like 8 years ago(still one plant per grow) ,but it was a different story ......I lived elsewhere ,I had the space and equipment ,better temps.......never had to worry about LST or SCROG.
It was pure hobby for me ,and I would like to start it again ,cause it's fun.
Nowadays ,there are so many strains that my head hurts after browsing through the sites ,many pros and cons about them ,etc.....I would like to keep it simple ,since I don't have as much time as I used to.

Are there any photo's which stay as short as Dwarfs / Lowryders ,and finish as fast?

Yield and strength don't matter to me ,I'm rather a Sunday Fisherman/Toker ,or during a walk in the woods......believe it or not ,what I had pulled off that Betty Boo lasted almost until the next one was done.

Maybe do an indica 12/12 from seed? most strains end up at 3-4ft and generally yield better than most autos

also depends on what kind of smoke/taste ur looking for before ppl can start giving reccommendations etc

I'm not picky at all when it comes to coffee ,wine , weed ,cigarettes.......I don't drink/smoke them regularly and I'm happy with what I have ,for the most things. I can't afford to be picky when growing in such a restricted space.
All I can say for sure is that I'm trying to avoid the most "potent" , "couchlock" "body stone" strains ,which many people prefer. I'd rather toke 5 mini toothpicks throughout the day ,then a big fat one ,causing me to fall asleep near my fishing rods or in the middle of the woods.:) I have really low standards when it comes to weed ,but I prefer growing it myself ,rather than messing with "vendors" ,and other "shady characters".

I can help:
Plants use the underside of the leaves to draw in co2, top of the leaves draw in sunlight, together they photosynthesize and make glucose, which can then be processed into more complex carbs like starch for energy reserves to make new fan leaves.

When they have big plants in cups, they use root pruning techniques (chop some off so more grow back in its place). Me mate does thos for his mothers as hes limited space.

Your plant will continue to grow no matter how big the container as long as you provide adequate water and nutrition consistently. You can get 5 or 6 foot tall plants easily in 1 gallon containers, but you'll be watering constantly.

That's why I went for shorter strains.I usually try keeping them plants as close to the light as possible ,given that I use CFL. A small PC fan ,maybe,to cool the air inbetween.
From what I saw online , the RoadRunner and Berry Ryder can grow tall and lanky sometimes, even in small pots ,but I hope they will be easier to train ,if needed.Didn't find much info on the WoS Jack Auto ,the advert said between 40-50 cm.
I plan to start with the ShortStuff#1 ,which is said to grow around 30-40 cm.Since hot weather is acomin' ,I expect some higher temps and stretching.Time will tell....

True.....but.....I'd rather have a nice 4ft monster full and brimming with nice TIGHT BUD.....I'm not saying it's not achievable but far easier if the right pot size is used....

I think you will be fine if you implement some training techniques early on in growth like you mentioned. Upload some photos if you can when you get it going.

All I have for now is a pic of my setup ,still waiting for the beads. When I did The Betty Boo I was using DVDs or books to bring the pot closer to the bulb ,which is fixed at the top.The hanging socket will be used for a 45 w blue CFL ,to light the plant till it has a few sets of leaves. Then I'll remove it ,and plug in the 125w 2700k ,at the top ,using some DVDs to raise the pot closer to it.
