When do plants grow faster? Day/Night?

well we got someone whos measured 4 times a day and has seen more growth at night. That post about plant genitics was very good and i do not want to bash the guy but i read most of what he said in my high school earth sciences class. His explination of ethelyn gas was good and hence the banana religion. i think i am going to try measureing my plants every 6 hours and see what happens :) im curious

If you are going to measure every 6 hours, can you post your results after a week or 2? I'm just curious about it. OH yeah, how old are your plants?

yes they get thier photosynthisis during the day through the leaves and then it is stored untill nigh time when it is resting to process it. your leaves may get larger during the day because of the light but the growth comes from the roots and they grow better in the coolness hence the dark. if bid leaves made big buds then why dont we nute our leaves instead of nuting the roots? Hmmmmmm
yep! at night the plant uses the stored sugars and food from the photosynthesis in the day, it also uses more of the nutrients that you've added in the soil at night because there's no heat energy to provide what it may need.

I just nuted my leaves at tonights night cycle. Foliar Feed.

personally i dont foliar feed, exept when i was testing dutch masters liquid light, but foliar feeding is fine up to 3-4 weeks of flowering before yr buds become too dense.

after getting to the childish outburst, i decided to skip the rest and just tell you the answer to this question. there's no debate, no variables, just science and fact.

light=photosynthesis=plant growth. no light, no growth. simple as that.

plant stretch is caused by hormones (auxins) that takes affect when there's not enough light, or when the plant is in darkness. some people call this growing taller....

so it depends on what you're referring to.

hope that helps.

Princess I'm so confused, that is exactly how I felt aswell. You can see it in my post. Who has enough time to measure before and after day and night cycle for a week and post results?

foliar during veg is fine. i would feed the roots if i wanted to get faster clones and good lighting

The roots are being fed in my bubbleponics tanks. And I have twin tube 4ft. floro.s in, until I either build my bloombox, or buy a light mover, drop in my 400HPS and you know the deal.

i have my plants on a 24/0 light period, 2 are struggling, but the other is shooting up. Would putting them on a 18/6 light period help the other 2? Please replie!

from my experience it grows faster at night my plant was about 10 weeks old and only 4 inches tall and i would never turn the light off then i switched to the 16/8 light cycle and it grew like crazy

i notice more growth at night, never notice any change during day except when they follow the sun, not just height but small leaves in center of seedlings will enlarge.

I searched/found this thread after noticing that they seem to grow faster after having a bit of darkness. Not just taller, but leaves getting bigger as well.

Here's what I found after reading this thread:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_cycle

This is my interpretation:

Basically when the plant is exposed to light, it is in daytime mode. Photosynthesis allows it to absorb the sun's energy and store it in sugar. It may grow also, but the plant is primarily in what I'll call "energy absorption/storage mode."

When in darkness, the plant "knows" that there is no sunlight energy and is in nighttime mode. This is when it uses the energy that's been stored to make itself stronger and bigger in order to absorb and store even more energy when it does see the sun again.

It's possible that plants that produce flowers/fruit and die may create and store more sugar, and grow more at night, because it is going to die when the light becomes scarce and it needs to have stored enough to reproduce. A bush that doesn't die would have no need to store as much energy or to grow as big as possible since it doesn't have as much need to reproduce.

This may be completely false conjecture, but evolution tends to lean towards logic and survival.

You're plants may not be happy with 24/0 because it is constantly synthesizing and it would need more than the recommended nutrients for a natural grow in order to store energy. It will become deprived of at least a few nutrients or two.

My plants are in Root Organics coco, with some higher end nutes, using a hybrid setup of sunlight as well as 200watts of flouro. They're growing ridiculously fast and it is very noticeable after they've seen darkness. I've been inadvertently alternating on 24/0 and something like 18/6 so basically 42/6. During the 24/0 days it almost seems halted/stunted in terms of growth, and after the 4-6 hours of darkness it's like an explosion.

I'll try 20/4 the next few days and see what happens.

[h=2]Darwinian Theory[/h]
  • Through his research and observation, Darwin concluded that plants actually grew more at night than during the day. His theory was that plants would grow faster and more suddenly when they received less light in an attempt to get more light. For example, a seedling growing slower than those around it will be blocked from the sun by taller seedlings; in an attempt to reach more sunlight, it will bolt and grow taller. Darwin believed that this adaptation followed through to nighttime and that as a result all plants grew faster at night.

[h=2]Building on Darwin[/h]
  • Biologists have recently found that plants actually possess a gene that regulates rhythmic growth. This research has essentially confirmed Darwin's theory, showing that plants tend to grow most rapidly just before dawn, usually in spurts that far surpass the rate of growth experienced by the plants at other times during the day. Much of this has to do with expending remaining energy stored the previous day before the next day comes to pass.

they grow more at night. there is a chemical reaction that happens inside and requires the dark for it. i will look through my stuff to find the scientific data to prove it. this has been a debate for a long time over 24/0 or 18/6. also there is more co2 produced when light is off so when the light comes on it take that extra up from the dark cycle.
plants don't produce CO2.. they consume it.
