When does “veg” actually start?

I have a dumb question trying to keep up with my time on these babies. I did a decent grow last time but didn’t keep a log of weeks in veg and weeks in flower which I’m doing this time. So does veg start right when they come up out of the soil or are they seedlings until a certain point then in veg?

Thanks in advance

Most people say seedling when refer to anything under 2 weeks and veg starts typically after that when most add nutes you would start calling it ceg instead of seedling. It’ll grow a node beyond the “seed leaves” (the two round ones that sprout first) the next set is know as true leaves and is when most full say “veg”.

Thank you that’s very helpful. So normally when it first sprouts around two weeks from that day veg would start?

By science its when the true leaves sprout, by everyday talk most people mean 1-2 weeks as seedling. Plants are like people they dont all grow the same So its hard to give a definitive beyond true leaves showig

these came out of the soil on January 12th the smaller one a day or so later. I’m just confused if they are week 3 of veg or around week. Also I did take one leaf or so off of each plant to let more light down to the nodes I did this last time and it worked pretty good 5View attachment 4282009

When u put the seed unhatched for aprox 4 weeks giva or take light, soil, hydro, light, heatmat and so on.
After 4 weeks the real veg is on until you hit preflowers. When u hit mature preflowers waiting 1 week xtra and then bloom hits. I uasually defoliate for the first 2 weeks but in a small scale. under the plant for airsorrunding and take well picked leaves thats away from big bud sites. \7 flodas

I count veg after the first 21 days after sprout. Another member once said after you see alternating nodes. That makes since too cause it's mature after alternating nodes
I agree with this ^^^
Isn’t this true of clones and two or three nodes after you top (maybe fimming too) that the nodes start to alternate? I could be wrong that’s just what I’ve seemed to notice...but definitely with clones the nodes alternate

Cotyledon leaves
First pair of serrated leaves
Second pair of serrated leaves

Usually this takes a couple of weeks after breaking the soil, but, as has been stated, different plants will grow at different rates, so I think it's better to gauge by the initial leaf development.

After this is when I call the beginning veg.

Right. When you start a clone, its already biologically mature; root to veg.
Reason I start counting after week 3 after seed, is cause those 3 weeks are pretty slow. And some ppl don't grow their plants long enough to reach maturity.
