When, how and how often should I top my plants?

A week ago I put clones under 600w lamps in a hydro system and I' ve heard it' s better to "top" them but I don' t know how exactly I should do it and don' t know when is the right time to do it.

Have also heard that some top them twice or even more often than that.

Any help would be appreciated.

I' m growing Brainstorm btw.

ok so I should have cleaned up the bottom of the plant. and stuck with just the two cola's. the plant was a little over a oz most of it wa the two colas.

you can top as many times as you want but i wouldnt do it more than twice.
above the 2nd true node works well

Generally for the second time, it is when the plant has healed and the top most bud is making nodes again. clip just the new ones!!! Other tops should be coming up from the sides from the previous pluck.

But when is the best time to do it for the first time, is it better to wait til they get big or is it ok to do it while they are small
?
