When Should I flower? 16 plants in 4x4 tent

I have 16 GH Super Bud feminized seeds in my 4x4 tent 10 inches under my air cooled 400w hps in veg.I will NOT be topping or LSTing any. When is the best time (yield wise) to switch to 12/12? I will be using a 1000w air cooled hps for flowering. I am planning on flowering when they are all 10 inches from the dirt. Does this sound about right for a 16 plant in this space? should I veg longer or shorter? Any advide/tips are appreciated. thanks

well considering this is obviously an sog grow (ie. 4 plants per sq ft = sog) id say dont go much longer than 2 weeks in veg if from seed. if from clone i'd flower either right away or no more than 1 wk into veg.

remember your plants will stretch in the flowering stage (from my experience ghs' gear loves to stretch) so i wouldnt wait too long to flower.

if a big yield is what you're after you should veg fewer plants longer. currently im working on a grow where i have 6 plants in 5gal pots and i will be vegging for 5-7 weeks. so far im just over 3 weeks in veg and my plants are all over 1ft tall already.

for yield you want bigger pots, longer veg, topping/FIM, LST, and supercrop. Thats how ive always gotten a big yield. i almost got a lb (14 ounces) once by using that method with only 5 plants in 3gal pots w/ a short 20 something day veg.

also if yield is what you're after look into co2. its basically steroids for plants.

Thanks for the quick reply. Right now I am almost at 2 weeks veg from seed, they are all only about 4-5 inches tall now since my hps is relatively close (10 inches) from the tops. Do you think 10 inches is too tall to start flowering at? Also, will CO2 be efficient in my setup with the 440 cfm exhaust connected to my cooltube with a 240 cfm intake at the bottom?

co2 will only really be of use in a sealed environment (ie. a grow tent) if you're just growing in a room then co2 will be a waste as it will escape from the area quickly. i don't grow in a perfectly sealed environment so co2 is out of the question for me. you'd have to ask a co2 head for more info on it.

as far as flowering goes id say you're good to go between 6-8 inches tall. since its from seed then don't flower just yet as the plant isnt mature enough (generally plants cant flower from seed until at LEAST two weeks in veg)

the reason you dont wanna veg too long is because you wont have the room come harvest time to keep them all. what size pots are you using?

Ok, then co2 will be out of the question for me as well lol.

What signs should I look for before flowering? My first grow with 5 plants (this is my second) I just flowered at 5 weeks and didn't really have to worry about maturity.

I have them in 2 gallon pots.

Also, I havent started using nutes yet, but I planned on using 1/4 recomended of Fox Farm nutes on my next watering. Any thoughts?

I think 10" is a decent heigth, considering you have 16 plants packed in there. IMO, you should've vegged under that 1000 though, because the 400 will make them a bit stretchy. should be fine though, as long as you don't let em get much bigger than that. I also agree, that a little training will help your yield. I'd probably top them, so you end up with more main colas, being that you aren't going to veg them very long. Other training methods take more time than you're wanting to use.

thanks for the input. What would you consider the best height before switching lights back?

You said that you have a 400W light . I would flower at 10" to 12 " in height . Your light will only penetrate so far , so you don't want them too bushy . Even if you get 1 1/2 oz per plant , that will give you over a pound on your harvest . Not too bad .
