I just trim the nugs off but leave a few inches of stem to be able to hang them with. I have seen some people hang the entire plant to dry though. I'm sure you will find lots of different things that people do.

Yep I cut branch by branch from the bottom up. saving the main cola last and I trim right away.

But does that kill the plant i want to cut off buds but still have a good plant thats not going to die

the plant is near the end of its life cycle when the flowers reach maturity. so its going to die anyway. you can reveg, but its a rough process. if you find a great phenotype, the best way to keep it going is to create mother and flower the clones
