which brand of soil from lowes or depot

I reuse mine. It's recycled. 4 cubic feet will last me as long as I want to use it. Might throw in some blueberries to rot.

I'm cheap as hell. I'm not dumping out prime soil.

when I get a nice size compost pile then I will need to start working on my own amendments and re-using the dirt

@Budzbuddha was using stagreen mix and doing well with it. I'll let him chime in on it.

pro mix is the last thing i buy at the local garden store but i use it to start all my garden seeds then i mix up my dirt with the rest its like 44 dollars

I looked it up on the walmart web site

and it does say "free shipping" I guess its not so free...mother fuckers

even at $44 its still only 0.30 cents cheaper per gallon than the ocean forest

not much of a savings considering all that the ocean forest has going for it

for a 5 gallon pot of fox farm ocean forest (at $20 per 1.5 cubic ft) it should cost about $9.05 per plant
for a 5 gallon pot of pro-mix BX (at $44 per 3.8 cubic ft) is should cost about $7.85 per plant

so your saying

don't throw it in the yard to compost and reuse the following year?

your saying I should use trash cans along with the amendments to store it and let it do its thing
what do you do, keep it in doors all year to keep it warm?

how long should I expect to leave a trash can of previously used soil to compost before re -using it again?

Mix thoroughly and I mean very thoroughly, breaking up any large clumps and chunks, making sure all ingredients become completely mixed. Then store the soil mixture in 3 large plastic covered garbage cans. Water the mixture thoroughly but do not drench or over water, be sure all soil is moist. Cover and allow to sit 6-12 weeks. As far as we know the soil does not have an expiration date, however we have always used ours within a year. The soil mixture needs to be above freezing but doesn't necessarily need to 'cook' as Sub had originally said. Do not become alarmed if you get white webbing, also on the same note, do not become alarmed if you do not get webbing. Lack of webbing could be the cause of the sun hitting the cans and burning the webbing off, it will not disrupt the process of your soil if it does not get webs due to sun. Best case scenario is to store at approximately 78 degrees out of the direct sunlight.

nope

clones went into a 50/50 mix of ocean forest and happy frog... no issues

no perlite... it drains pretty fast on its own.. and im having to water 1/2 to 3/4 gallon every 2 days as it stands in a 3 gallon pot

I grow about four plants using 1 gallon smart pots. After harvest or a male. I stick the pot(s) on the back porch and water them with soft water, the volume of the pot. It'll go from Brown to clear on run off.

I let it sit. Then dump it out in an old cat litter plastic pan. Let it dry.

I dump it into an ice chest after that. It's 12 gallons. Beer cooler'. I have no idea what country I'm typing to. The thing you store beer in.

I'm still going through a new bag....but that's the plan and I'm sticking to it. I've flushed three 2 gallon pots. Dry...then ice chest.


There's a tote below the ice chest with old-school super soil. It's old too. Turned every month. I'm exploring chem nutes and basic promix is the ticket.

I think I will do the same thing when im composting the used soil

I don't think im going to bother with the pro mix, its just not enough of a savings over the fox farm

I would have thought the price difference would have been greater

ive got 4 plants in 3 gallon pots now using ocean forest

they've been pinched 3 times and only required small mounts of fertilizer and they all look super healthy

even thou I ended up staying with the fox farm I still got a ton of info from this thread

what the cost on a 1.5 cubic ft bag?

walmart had some cool organic bag soils i noticed. they had a hummus rich blend or 5 going for them. id just pick up one of those and add some EWC and call it a day. add ass much EWC as you want as long as you get drainage lol. you can start fucking lettuce in EWC ... slow release forever

edit: the soils were found in the parking lot "isle"
