everythinghazy said it when they are ready the buds will swell and they will get harder which you check for by gently squeezing them with your fingers. When the bud swells the majority of the pistils/ hairs will be red/brown/orange and the calyxes (the leaves in the bud) will generally fold up. Then you can get your loop or scope out and check the trichs. From here IME if left another 1 to 3 days (in the dark if the option is available) the buds will get frostier, but the longer the plant sits more of the trichs turn from clear to cloudy and/or from cloudy to amber. Just keep that in mind before n as you sit them with the type of high you desire.

The hairs wont lay down but they will curl and will not stick out as far as they do when white or recently turned.
