Well in nature the seeds are getting night and day, so how many of you germinate there seeds under light to bring them up over full darkness?
Thanks

i germ all my seeds in the light. i just throw them in one layer of paper towel, put them n a baggy and throw them in my veg room. usually right under the lights. you can see right thru the paper towel. they always germ.

well..i mean, i do the paper towel method and put it in a ziplock bag on back of my t.v for heat...so they get both dark and light.....i really don't think it matters that much..just as long as it gets the right mixture of air, heat and moisture

The only reason I would say darkness would be better for germinating is because roots grow primarily in the dark.when a seed is germinating it is just trying to develop roots.

I would say that darkness and warmth is your best way.

not saying your ways aren't suitable.

I do it in dark, but under my light for warm, I just wrap it in a few boxer shorts believe it or not haha

when i was a kid it was just get a container..... fill with cotton wool and sprincke some seeds in maybe give em a push in or another fine layer.... put em out outside in the sun somewhere sunny yet shady and keep em damp... i could let em get up to there first true leaves or ssecond leaves and put em in pots... simple, effective and easy still had good germ rates and i could normally have left em in the cotton longer but i dont want the roots to tangle....

i think its more a problem of too much direct hot light and they havent got much hope tho. seriously the water gets too hot and fries them too :(

I guess mine get a bit of both. I put paper towel in my styro plate put some seeds in, water it, put another paper towel over top then cover with another styro plate. If my heating pad is not in use, I put the plates on top of that, if it is in use, I put in on the back of my computer monitor. I usually get germination in 24 hours.

I don't think that light or dark matters; I believe as long as you have a wet medium to put the seeds on and it's in a warm atmosphere, your going to get germination.

Thanks everyone for your generosity and time, can I assume if I use the paper towel method I don't need to persoak the seeds?
Thanks

I germinating my seeds in my temp grow area under 225 watts of CFLs and they are doing fine in a small try (as my Avi pic) in plane water. That pic was just when I started to germinate them for the first 3 hours

i put my medium in my pot, poke ahole, drop the seed in, water, and put them in a dark cupboard in my kitchen until i see something pop out. works every time.

I have done it both ways,it does not make a difference.I use the paper towel in a baggie to germinate my seeds. My germination percent is the same with light or dark.I now germ on my window sill only.
I had some seeds i was having trouble getting to germ,i thought it was from being left out in the light.I tried the same number of seeds in the dark.I had 1 seed from each batch germ.I have done this with good seeds and had the same percentage 1 or 2 seeds difference either way.OPH

i have a simular question!! i germ my seed in paper towel method!! that works fine, now when they sprout a 1/4 inch of root i plant in a small 6inch pot root down about 5mmunder soil suface!! right what ive done this time is = as soon as i planted the seed i put it immedietly under my cfls 24hrs constant.

can any1 tell me wetha that method is ok or is it better to keep them in the dark until they pop the surface??
