Still believing in that stupid World's Greatest Democracy thing, huh?

The idea behind the electoral college (and the Senate) was that it would not allow the most populous states to ride over the rights of the smaller states.

Though the Electoral College has been screwed up by the fact that it is now a "winner take all" system in many states.

The system was not meant to create a mobocracy, but to form a system where individuals were elected to vote on the candidate that their fellow residents had chosen.

Which means any state that has a winner take all system is effectively allowing urban centers to dictate to rural populations, and essentially making it so that their vote is marginalized and minimalized.

Good examples of this are New Mexico (largely rural, with just Albuquerque and Santa Fe worthy of being on the map.) Popular vote in the two districts outside of Albuquerque was largely Republican. Popular vote in Albuquerque went to the Democrats, thus popular vote was for Democrats, but the state would have had 2 representative electoral votes for Bush, and 3 for Kerry, not 5 for Kerry.

Thus two districts were essentially told that their vote was worthless.

The reason the electoral college was created was to ensure that everyone's vote was actually counted, not to allow the "majority" to dictate to the minority.
Ah.. thank you! Man, reading that was great, I wish I'd been able to say it so well and succinctly.

Too many ignorant idiots in those red states..Voting for Jesus and Guns. They should have to graduate from a civics class before they are allowed to vote, hell everyone should have to. Then at least they would know the workings of government and be able to make more informed choices. The republicans for years have relied on the snake handlers to get elected, that is some sick shit.

OMG, you are too funny. I can only guess who you would support to teach these civics classes.

Can we call it 're-education' classes. Kinda like a Maoist cultural revolution.

That's how the working of the Federal government is supposed to work alright.

'Purge all those that are deemed 'ignorant' and the voting process will only end with the DNC. One party rule?

Just my opinion tho. (Gotta be politically correct when dealing with Libs, I don't want to be labeled a 'nazi pig' or whatever).

I understand what you're saying, and maybe there's something to it for some situations, but when you're electing ONE PERSON for ONE JOB, and everyone in the country gets to vote (well, who's qualified, old enough, etc), then I don't see why a 'country vote' should weigh more than a 'city vote' (or vice versa), and I don't see why millions of voters are effectively disenfranchised to add extra oomph to rural votes in the choosing of the person for one particular office.

I guess this is one of those things that it's pointless to argue about. Apparently, those who identify themselves as strongly conservative actually have physiologically different brains, that react differently to things (especially fear), compared to the brains of those who identify themselves as strongly liberal. So, I can't argue anyone into having a different brain; if you're strongly conservative or strongly liberal, a good deal of that is likely genetic and even if you wanted to change, you couldn't.

(Interesting stuff. Investigate on your own. There's a growing body of evidence to support this. Conservative brains are basically more easily startled, more sensitive to fear, and that affects their politics -- it explains racism, anti-gay prejudice, sexism, all kinds of things, all fear-oriented reactions to perceived threats to self or society. Explains religion too, to some extent -- an attempt to mitigate the fear of death.)

Interesting. I consider myself vehemently conservative and I don't fear a damn thing.

except losing your 4th amendment rights. lol :peace:
You'd call it fear? I wouldn't. I'd call it anger that "We the People" have voted in "Representatives" (and I use that term loosely) that have demonstrated blatant disregard for the Constitution and have, over the years, insidiously chipped away at our rights as guaranteed by said Constitution. Fear? Afraid? I don't think so...and the cops that came onto our property months ago found that out when I handed them their asses. After that incident was over, Seamaiden said to me "They could've hauled you off." My retort? I replied "I don't care. I will protect what's ours and my family."

Those same studies showed that it is not true for everyone, and that it's a generality they noticed that may partially explain their political stances.. walking around acting like it's truth for everyone is just ignorant..

Nope...Just Quid Pro Quo.
Hey Mr. wad, I didn't threaten you. I just commented on your testosteron. In case you haven't reached reason yet, Might is not always right, and the toughest guy can't stop bullets. I remember the days when I thought I was eight ft. tall and bulletproof, whiskey highway, tequela and a few other additives always helped, but being straight for the last twenty or so years has pretty much let my ego breathe. I've kicked ass and been the recipient of a couple a good ass kickings. Amazing what insight one gains from a good ass kicking. Sounds like you haven't got yours yet.

I love my smoke but I am not a Marxis, Communist, or socialist. Hate the war, but the Islamist want to kill you and would if they could, so I hate war but love my freedom. I still feel free, but I will never be a Muslim, RED, or socialist. No matter how bad people feel this country, just wait til you have no chioce in what you watch on tv, the net, and forget about freedom of speech, that is practically gone here in America, I feel it started to leave us because of the N word, we white folks cannot say a word, but the ones who protest the "N" word love to use it on a regular basis! I love all veterans, and those who gave thier life for freedom and admire thier service to this country, but even you cannot use the "N" word! ruby
