Yeah when I was a kid (so many moons ago) my Dad subscribed to the Farmers Alminac, I always enjoyed reading it, lots of useful information

seems like in these new times of higher technology some of the old standby's are falling to the wayside

Dear Street Legal.....

I have a Quick Question about the Solution Levels in a DWC.

I've never grown anything but I've been researching my first grow for a while, now im at the stage where im considering the chemistry/nutrient side of things in detail. But before I get into that I first need to work out the plumbing and out how many Gallons I need my system to hold for my plants....Hopefully you can help me on my way.

Imagine I had 2 x 15Gallon Tubs, with 3 x plants in each tub, so 6 plants total.

Imagine I also had a third 15Gallon Tub which I use as a Control Bucket, complete with a Valve fed from a Large Reservoir that I mix my solution in.

Basically, I'd like to work out a rough estimate for how much solution each plant will drink, so I can finalize my tub and reservior size.

For instance, depending on the answer I may chose 6 individual Buckets over 2 Tubs, or chose a larger Reservior etc. So any info you can provide will be apprciated !

My set-up isn't set in stone as you can see, but im definetely going with a DWC/Control Bucket set up.

Now I just want an IDEA of what to expect from my Plants drinking habits, so I can continue my planning.... thanks!

From what I've read, and this could be wrong, the best nutrient set-up for a beginner is where you mix together your solution in the Reservior and then top up the solution level with fresh water as your plant drinks the level down. Apparently, adding fresh water as your plants soaks up the solution keeps the ppm low, which is a good thing. Then, when the nuterient strength in the Reservior gets low/too diluted, you add more nutrient to the existing solution along with fresh water to top the overall solution level back up. You then start the process from the beginning, allowing the plants to drink the solution back down while you refill the reservoir with fresh water and slowly dilute the Nutrient...

Some people think new Nutrient should be added weekly, gradually increasing its strength, so I need to know HOW MUCH my Ladies will drink in order to decide what Volume Reservior and Tubs to use in my set up. I'd hate to buy a Reservior that can't keep up with my ladies, as I'd have to top up mid-week to keep up. I'd rather be able to plan a system which can support my plants drinking needs for at least a week. ALSO, I've read some people keeping the same Nutrients in the system for the whole grow!!! Or for a few weeks at a time. For me to have the flexibility to chose how long I keep the same Nutrients in my system, I need an idea of how much each Plant drinks. Ideally, I'd like to plan my system around a weekly Reservior top up, but its nice to have options!

So thats my question - You might need to know how large I plan to grow my 6 plants to give a good answer - I want my first grow to be 3 months / 12 weeks. That means 1 month veg from clone up to 1FT tall then 2 months flowering up to 3FT tall at Harvest. Can you could give me an idea of how much one plant drinks on a monthly basis over 3 months, or better yet on a WEEKLY basis, 4 weeks veg and 8 weeks flowering? That would be perfect Bud !

Thanks again Street Legal, great Thread!

hey guys :)
i'm noob on this stuff so I got some questions that I would apreciate if some helped me :bigjoint:
I'm making indoor growing with a closet of 2 meters high, and I got there 2 cheese and 8 northern lights. They are getting 21 hours sun of a 600w lamp.
biggest one got 35cm, the smallest has 20cm.
I've been taking the biggest ones some hours every day so the smallest can reach 30cm at least so I can start flowering.
after everything how much usually a plant gives to you ?
Some tips to mix the smell ?
How much is usual the extra on the electricity bill ?

thks, cheers :)

You can simply arange the taller plants to the outside of your garden like a stairstep (think stadium seating) as the intensity of the light is higher in the center of your growspace, so put smaller plants in the center.

and you not need them to be of equal hieght to flower unless you are doing sog or scrog

after everything how much usually a plant gives to you ?

Grown properly you can get 2 to 4 oz's per plant easily, though most new growers do not reach that amount oh thier first grow

Some tips to mix the smell ?

Best option is a ventilation system that includes a carbon scrubber, there are several good tutorials here that show how to build one, or you can just buy one

How much is usual the extra on the electricity bill ?

with 600 watts is like having a tv and computer running all day depending on your rates expect $20 to $30

thks, cheers :)

Hey riddleme, I like the shots of your students CFL grow, I'm impressed.

Question: I'm told by an expert grower that his students are pulling a pound from a 600w HPS in a 2'x2' enclosure with 4 plants that finish at about 3' tall, common genetics. Do you think this is plausable or totally impossible?

yep, 3 gallons per plant..
change ur tubs out every 2 weeks, and just top them up as needed..
As for which system to use, totes or buckets etc.. go here read and ask.. https://www.rollitup.org/dwc-bubbleponics/ then come back and teach me DWC!,.. u seem a very clued up individual so i dont think u shall have any problems
Now piss off and stop making me look bad:bigjoint:

It is plausable/possible but I would argue the 2'X2' area making it more difficult to do IMO a 3'X3" space would work and a 4X4 even better, it really is not a problem to get a QP off each plant if properly grown, but they would need space to flourish

My next grow will be very similar 4X4 space with a 400 watt CMH I expect to get a pound and then plan on making it perpetual :bigjoint:

Just gotta get my new house closed and then I'll be at it again with new experiments

I know some of the things you learn from growing you never forget, such as germinating, or pruning, but It seems that everything in between is a mystery to me again, although I've grown about 3 plants before. I first started with 4 seeds, 1 took off right away, 2 months later its outside growing about 1/2 -1/4 inch a day, I also got two sprouts that were taking a considerably longer amount of time, 2 weeks after they sprouted my moms boyfriend really wanted to try and build a grow room. A week later, the grow rooms up and running, we originally had them 5 inches from the plant which caused almost immediate burning, 12 hours later 2 of the plants 4 leaves were crispy, so we took them out, made the switch to hydro put the plants in rockwool, ph balance and everything. 12 hours later the plants have grown 4 baby leaves and seem to be taking off. My question is, first, will my plant taste better than the two hydro babies since its completely natural and outdoor, and will the two babies be stressed when completed due to the switch?

Thanks, you're my first second opinion on this.

Looking forward to your CMH grow and I like experiments!

good shit man,.. haha first q me n riddles will bump heads on im sure!..
1. no ur buds will taste the goddamm same! placebo bs this organic vs synthetic argument.. but hang on, that isnt really the question..... i think most peeps can tell the diff between outdoor/indoor, yes
2. yes theyll be a little stressed but theyll get over it, slight setback in growth..
but sounds like ur on the right track GL
