why not all pig tail cpf

Maybe a silly question but, why couldn't a person use all full spectrum pigtail compact fl bulbs 2600 lum per bulb for all growing $ 9:00 per bulb 10,000 hours per bulb? Like you could use 10 or 15 bulbs and save power and heat. Any imput? I am a newbie of course and am just and my aerogarden is doing fine and it is all CFL Thanks:peace:

I believe full spectrum bulbs distribute the power between the wavelengths it puts out. For example, a red bulb puts out wavelengths in the red band due to the properties of its phosphor coating. Change the coating a little bit and you get a blue bulb. Full spectrum bulbs have a phosphor layer that essentially 'splits' the radiation from within and emmits light in red, green and blue instead of focusing on one wavelength

This is MY understanding from some reading I did.

Thanks for your help. I am just looking at ways to grow a couple 3 or four little plants and keep them small. I have an aerogarden and again is doing the job. I started the plants intop bud mode at 4.5 inch's and will harvest reward in 2 weeks, so far so good. I am sure the buds would probably be bigger if I used more than just the lights that came with it but like I said so far so good for a small setup. My profile pic is one of my little girls 2 weeks ago. Did you harvest your bud yet Daisy, nice job with yours setup.

Yeah man they're looking good for the setup. The biggest problem there is the light placement. Was the light adjustable during the grow? I think if it was closer for the grow they wouldnt have stretched as much?

Yes next time i will have them closer. Heard about burning from being to close but I am guessing that is manly from HD bulbs HEAT,. So you think the full spectrum bulbs would be good for growing? Thinking about adding them next time. Again I think they where around $9 or so per bulb at Home Depot

yeah with some reflectors around them would be fine (ie. cut aluminum can). gives all spectrum so covers all the bases. not the perfect set up, but will def. get the job done with no problems

It would work

I'd rather stick with the blue and red bulbs so I know I'm giving my plant what it needs during its phases

Red and blue refer to the wavelength of light the bulb puts out on the light spectrum. This is also measured in Kelvins which you can find in really small print on the box.

So for example 'red' CFL bulbs are sold as 'warm white' and have a Kelvin rating of 2700K. Weed uses red wavelengths during flowering.

'blue' bulbs are labeled as 'cool white' or 'daylight' and have a rating of 6500K. The plant uses this wavelength for photosythesis and is all it uses during vegetation.

So in short, during the vegetation stage you want all blue light. For flowering you want almost all red light, maybe a few blue (4:1 ratio?)

Thank you for the help! So if I use the full spectrum bulbs I get the red and the blue. Thanks again:peace:
