see, i think that this sue sue sue sue mentality is exactly what's wrong with our country.. yah, it's effed up, of course it is, but no one ever said life was fair, you want a job, guess what, you've got to play by their rules, if not, find a new job, simple as that.. no need to sue sue sue cuz you got your panties in a bunch..
I do agree that people do sue and get sued over the most ridiculous things, with that said "they" have to play by the rules as well and if "they" do not there are consequences. You may not realize it but discrimination is illegal, you also may not think being discriminated against is not a big deal but it is. I never gave it a second thought until it happened to me, not fun.

A employer employee relationship is not a master servant relationship.

Now I would also like to say i was trying to be a bit funny when i said sue sue sue, but if you do end up getting fired due to this incident its not right and you should do something about it.

Tell her to go to the Labor Board or the EEOC. Have one of those organizations deal with it. She doesn't have to sue but you can't just violate laws on a whim or "majority vote".
Yes, if you do contact the EEOC make sure you have contacted a lawyer first. I went to EEOC first (which btw tends to be incompetent just as any Federal wing of Gov) and it was a near disaster.

Good luck, its a shitty situation hope it goes well.

I think somebody is trying to get her fired. I would threaten to su, and then ask for a raise for dealing with the discrimination.

If she works for a corporation contact the human resource department. They will deal with it for you. Chances are they will find some other grounds for termination. If not sue them. I'm not one for fuckin people over with lawsuits but religious discrimination is a load of crap... now racial discrimination I'm all about that! J/k. Good luck the law is now on your side!

I think it's really fascinating that in six pages of "sue / don't sue / be pissed / go along with it" discussion, not one person has asked whether she sat down with her boss and DISCUSSED the problem. I don't mean in the moment when she was told to cover it up; I mean after she has had a chance to process the information and come back to discuss why she thinks his request is unreasonable. Here's what I think is one of our major problems in this country. We are so ready to be offended by everything and that brings about our readiness to sue sue sue (well, that and greed). More than likely, some ignorant ass was offended by this tattoo and complained, so the boss makes a rash decision and acts on the perceived offense and now we advise the girl to be offended and sue. Yes, she is being discriminated against and should not just accept it and go along because she is not in the majority. But is there not a better response than suing or marching immediately to the labor board?

Maybe this whole thing could be resolved with a sit-down discussion where the girl explains why she feels she is being unfairly singled out and tries to come to a reasonable solution. Maybe the guy hasn't even considered the fact that he has just discriminated against one of his employees. I mean, hell, the boss did hire her and obviously did not seem to have a problem with it initially. That indicates that he is at least a somewhat reasonable person. Maybe he just needs to be educated about what the tat signifies and why it is important to the girl. And if this is coming from another employee, then maybe he needs to be gently reminded that he cannot gold one employee to a different set of standards than any other employee. It's entirely possible that the boss just reacted to a complaint without really thinking it through. Believe me, people do this ALL THE TIME.

In the end, I don't think she should stand for or back down against discrimination, and if the boss refuses to do the right thing, then she has every right and possibly even a responsibility to stand up, but don't just jump there right away. Talk to the dude.

It is not her place to counsel her boss on discrimination i think they as managers have to take classes on the and interpesonal relations and if the didnt shame on them

1st she needs to check the policy on tattoos. Then if she is still in compliance with that she can tell them her tattoo is covered under the 1st amendment. This is both freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

also she needs to get the names of every other person she sees with a religious tattoo. When the boss says something like.. "well yours makes others blah blah" whip out your list of everyone else tattoos. tell them these offend you and they should be covered up also.

Wierd cause tattoed people usually don't give a shit whether a person is tattoed or not......The Symbol goes all the way back before Christianity, Islam, Budhism...were even thought of...Its an old Pagan Symbol for the Divine Goddess or some shit. Big deal.....I'd talk to bossypoo and at least defend your rights from discrimination.

She hasn't had a chance to talk to her boss. The talking to came at the end of the work day on friday right before she went home. I told her she needs to talk to the people that she gets along with at work and ask them if that girl has said anything about her to them. That way if she is saying stuff and they admit it, then she can at least have people that will back up her claims that the girl is making it a hostile work environment. Then she needs to go to her boss and explain that unless everyone's tat's are covered up, she isn't going to cover hers up.

The company isn't a corporation. It's a privately owned business that contracts work from a few cities. She is completely with in the guide lines for tat's and dress code in the hand book. She is just being singled out because the tiny religious tattoo on her neck offended someone who is obviously way to easy to offend.
