Wiring PC fan: Please Help

So, my computer had two fans... no $hit.

One i got to work on an adapter.
it's an 8.4vdc adapter.

The fan i can't get to work on that is 12v. It has three wires. Black, Red, White.

I've tried every combination. I'm not an electrical educated person, trial and error works for me.

Why doesn't it work?

Also, is there a way i can wire these fans directly to the ATX power supply on the computer? I tried, and then blew out all the plugs on my upstairs :hump: :hump:

Have you stripped down the wires on both the computer fan and the adapter or are you for instance trying to plug the wires of the adapter directly into the 3-pin connector on the fan? I don't think that works. You need to strip down the wires and connect them with a wire bit or just twirl the wires together. Simply experiment to find matching wires. You won't get electrocuted since the voltage is so low...

Might obviously be a malfunctioning fan too.

This is what I set up for a friend of mine. Bought a cheap ass PSU and jump started it (how to jump start a PSU). You also need to get a fan controller of some kind since you don't have a motherboard to connect the fans to (for instance this one.) They're pretty cheap and as an extra bonus you can adjust the fan speed to suit your grow room!

if you have a 12vDC fan u should have an adapter thats output is 12vDC, then you just use the black and the red wires with the wired you get from the plug, this should work, if not then u have a misfunct fan or outlet addapter, i made 4 of these fans the other day with no problems

So I'm looking for a fan that will push 80+ cfm. I have found some on newegg.com for pretty cheap, but am uncertain if I can use a standard 12v power cord...the website does not specify the voltage of the fans...is it safe to assume they are all 12v? Some of them pull 3/4 to 1 amp and produce over 110 cfm. I really want one, but want to make sure I can wire it right first.

Thanks for the help
