my good friend who works for make-a-wish does just fine. so does everyone who works for the health insurance companies in germany, who are mandated by law to be not for profit.

The US government gave huge land concessions and financing guarantees to the railroads. Until this was done, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific had zero financing despite their efforts. Even then investment was difficult as the government stipulated that they would be the primary mortgage holder. Private investment still stayed away as they would lose their shirt if the venture failed. Only when the Railroad bill was amended so that the US taxpayer would be the last ones to be paid in the event of failure did private financing step in.
A little history is not enough. Maybe you should pass the time by playing a little solitaire.
