Not the owner but the overseer. They were in the fields on horseback usually watching over the workers (slaves). To make sure they were working hard. But lazy pieces of shit all the same.
i thought it was more after slavery got repealed and the whites that weren't used to doing shit had to actually go do a days work to replace the slave labor.

No and no. They wore red scarves around their necks to distinguish themselves from Pinkerton armed mercenaries who were engaging them in firefights.

They lost that battle, by the way. But the movement for workers rights did not do there and in fact gathered momentum.

It is due in no small part to their sacrifice that we have the worker protections we enjoy today. Until the Republican party thinks up more ways to sell them down the river, of course.
