how do you work out a gram per watt

gpw is totally arbitrary but we've used it for so long as a metric on the forums that it gives us an idea of how tuned in a grow is.

Yeah, only reason I use it is because this is where I learned about growing. I like @Renfro suggestion about using grams per square foot but I’d like to know what the scale is (ie what’s considered good/bad/avg)

It’s not that hard. I managed 1.3gpw on my first grow despite a bunch of rookie mistakes. Shooting for closer to 2gpw this time around.
Yes i know its not hard when it's easy, the op freely admits he's inexperienced that makes it a difficult task, what did you get on from your 1st, 2nd crops?

First crop was 4.25lbs of good bud from two 720w LEDs. There was close to a pound of larf that I don’t include in that figure. Currently on my second grow now and things are going wayyyy better. I’ve got all of my environmental controls dialed and automated and understand nutes now. I did my whole grow last time reading my VPD chart backwards

GPW is a poor metric since different lighting methods require different amounts of power. Grams per sqft is a better metric for comparing different grows.
I think it originated when a 5x5 = 1000w 4x4 = 600w 3x3 400w its outdated but it gives me a bench mark figure i can relate to.

Kinda like how in the UK they use stone still. Ridiculous metric for weighing someone but it’s still used because people can relate

I agree but even comparing different grows can be wonky though right?
Did some guy Veg 2 or 8 weeks to achieve his flowering GPW or did some guy cut 100 clones and immediately flower?

GPW, total grow costs, and length of grow all are big factors.
Are they flowering 14 week strains or 8 week stains?

Nine in a 4x4 is to many for me unless you are growing a bunch of one ounce plants and even then it is tight
I like ya Herby and I'm not doing this to show ya up.............................but it can be done. 16 one ounce plants under a 600 watt hps in a 4 x 4 tent.

4 tops per plant for 64 total,

A combo of crazy fires near my home, covid stress and a bad relationship led to me losing control of my drinking (and therefore job) so i had to check into rehab a week before harvest. I missed it all. My buddy handled it all and has pictures of the final product. One of these days I’ll get him to send them to me. I know it looks like I’m trying to pull some bullshit lol. Barring my own demise or another trip to rehab (unlikely, one was enough!) I will fully document this run. I know everyone on the internet is a liar so I’m not expecting you to trust me

I had 9 in a 5x5 it was a squeeze, I removed one unruly one 2 didn't perform at all, 4 yeilded 120/140g one was 228g iirc.

They just didn't perform that's another downside to seeds.
884g all in 600w + 10% boost.

My buddy that handled it for me works for a cannabis distro business so his entire photo album is pictures of weed. I tried to explain to him how to search by date but he couldn’t be bothered. Next time I see him I’m gonna commandeer is phone and get pics.

Looks like I was only at around 38g per sq ft for my last run. Definitely room for improvement. Thanks for giving me an idea of where I need to be.
2 zips per sqft equates to getting 2 pounds off a 1kW SE HPS and a 4x4 foot area.
