Former President Donald Trump's legal team has formally requested a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland, amid fears from his attorneys that the coming weeks could bring a possible indictment of Trump regarding his alleged efforts to retain materials after leaving office and to obstruct the government's attempts to retrieve them.
The letter, though thin on details, presents arguments that Trump should not be charged in the investigation related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents, sources familiar with the matter tell ABC News.
The letter asks Garland for a meeting at his earliest convenience to discuss what the attorneys describe as the "ongoing injustice that is being perpetrated" by special counsel Jack Smith and says that no president has been "baselessly investigated" in such an "unlawful fashion."
The one-page letter was signed by Trump lawyers John Rowley and James Trusty, and does not outline any specific allegations of wrongdoing by Smith and his team.
The request does not specifically detail what Trump's legal team wants to discuss with the attorney general. Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing associated with his handling of materials bearing classification markings.
It's not clear whether Trump's attorneys are acting on any specific knowledge of Smith's investigation.
Trump posted the letter on his Truth Social account Tuesday night.

Carlson had 113 mentions, followed by MSNBC host Rachel Maddow (107) and then Fox News pundit Sean Hannity (57), who was tied with former Daily Show host and comedian Trevor Noah.
NBC News anchor Lester Holt placed highest among non-opinion journalists, placing seventh with 55 mentions.
For the past six years, Carlson hosted a prime-time show on Fox News, a nightly program that raked in an average of more than 3 million people each weeknight.
The bombastic host was taken off the air by the network earlier this month, just days after it settled a blockbuster defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems.
Carlson, who is still under contract with Fox, has said he plans to bring a new version of his former Fox News program to social media platform Twitter, though has not provided many details or specifics on format, length or content.

Gaetz says most in GOP ‘don’t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage’
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said Tuesday that he and his conservative colleagues “don’t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage” on a debt-limit compromise.
In his comments, the Florida Republican underscored the precarious negotiating position House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is in as he seeks to strike a deal with the White House that could ultimately pass the House.
“My conservative colleagues for the most part support ‘Limit, Save, Grow’ and they don’t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage,” Gaetz told Semafor on Tuesday, doubling down on his support for the House-passed GOP bill that would cut spending by an average of 18 percent in exchange for raising the debt ceiling.
Hardline conservatives have made clear they would oppose any deal that does not extract major concessions from President Biden, making the task of striking a deal with enough broad support even more difficult. At the same time, McCarthy must still consider the constant threat that any member of his conference could call for a motion to vacate at any time — a reality Gaetz acknowledged in his comments to Semafor.
“I believe the one-person motion to vacate has given us the best version of Speaker McCarthy and I think he’s doing a good job,” Gaetz said Tuesday, touting the provision that he helped secure in exchange for his eventual support of McCarthy’s speakership bid in January.
Gaetz made clear, however, that while the motion to vacate has bolstered his own leverage in negotiations, there are no ongoing discussions in the conference about ousting McCarthy from his post.
“Literally nobody except the press is talking about removing McCarthy right now,” Gaetz wrote on Twitter, adding in a statement to the Washington Examiner that he has “no plans” to try to remove McCarthy.

Polls seem to be news. However they reveal less information than most people think they do. The way the questions are framed can be so biased that two polls nominally on the same issue can yield widely divergent numbers.

It's not the negotiation that is the issue, its the size of the ask. Biden is not going to cut social security, SNAP, Medicaid in ways that harm people and at the same time impose arbitrary spending limits. He was willing to discuss the work requirements. A week or so ago, there were reports of a compromise that was immediately withdrawn by Republicans.
So, yeah, there are some areas open for discussion but Republicans have all along been able to cut a deal. It seems clear to me that Republicans think tanking the economy by causing the country to default would be politically good for them. I don't think they even want a deal. Hence the nuisance bid they made earlier.

Since a considerable minority can think critically, the average is nonzero. Beware hyperbole; it causes its own set of problems and prejudices.
To the topic, polls draw my displeasure in two ways.
1) They are often the latest manifestation of that most unworthy of journalistic questions: How does it make you feel?
2) By donning the mantle of numbers, they try to pass that sensationalism off as somehow objective, even scientific.
Few people think about this, so it erodes the “nonzero but not much” that is left. These days a David R. Murrow would be slaughtered by ratings, because sober thoughtful journalism doesn’t sell. May the lice of ten thousand camels nest in Murdoch’s bedding.
