Lighting question

Just a quick question if anyone can help.
I have a room, 7x8 ft. i have enough room for 3 lights in air cooled hoods.
I have one 400w digital ballast.
Should I buy two more 400watters? Or can I do one 400 watter, and one or two 600 watters? Can I mix them up??
Should all my lights be the same wattage to have good control of my grow room? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

well, i guess lets forget about electric bill. I have room for only 3 lights. I have one 400 watt digi. I plan on buying two more in the next month. Should I stick with all 400 watters? or can i maybe do a 600 or two in the mix? Will it be weird having one 400 w and one 600 w right next to eachother connected at the hood??

I was thinking... dosn't it make sense to have 3 lights of equal wattage, that way they can all be at the same height. also, venting won't have any bends or curves, and they can be closer to the plants. By throwing a 600, or 1000 in the mix might make your garden awkward... Shit i cant decide

That's why lights are adjustable, plants don't care if all the lights are at the same level though.

You want everything perfect, I know, but shit happens. By the time you are done you'll have added and taken away all kinds of stuff and you'll be running a very functional mishmash of gear. The bottom line is what works and not what is aesthetically pleasing to your eyes. Worrying about curves in the venting is nuts. Buy whatever lights you think are best and forget about the 400W. It will work with anything.

If the choice is letting the 400W sit in a corner or use it, you know what I'd vote for.

Im not worried about the curves in the venting for aesthetic reasons, Its for air flow reasons. I read that ducting curved at a 30 degree angle loses about 30 percent airflow from your fans. The least amount of curves and bends in your room, the better airflow you'll have. But i def hear you, Im gonna use everything i got, no 400 watters sitting in a corner over here. Thanks picasso

I dont know much about lights but if you plan of buying two more 400 watters why not just get a 1000 watt and save money on ballast and lights? You are going to spend more money on 2 more 400 watters when you can spend half of that and just get a 1000 watt

Just use the rule of 50 watts per square foot of garden..

you have 56 sq feet your prob only gonna use like 40 for the actual plants...

So try and get as close to 2000 watts as possible

Should i keep em low? Or fuck it and just get 1000w?? Is 1000w really worth it?? Cervantes says more lower watt bulbs are better...

I would ask Cervantes his reasoning...

600 is the most effecient in terms of lumen per watt i hear..and the spread my be sligtly better, but would not warrant any of the two reasons to stop from purchasing the 1000 w personally for that size space unless you dont have height...

The most efficient per watt is the 1000 HPS, thats easy to see with some math...

The reason people use 600's is the are the best per heat output.

You can stick a 600 in a relativly small space and be OK, but a 1000 in the same and you can get over 100 in temps if your not carefull...

Go with three 600's...

or four if the $$$ there

Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it. I still have a few more questions.
Since im using theese air cooled hoods, I plan on sucking air out of the hoods. By using a single 1000 watt I can probably suck the air out more effeciently using one fan.
If i have 3 lights, will i need more than one fan to suck out the heat from all the hoods?
How much more heat will a 1000 watter give off compared to three 600's?
"Benifits of using lower wattage bulbs- More point sources of light, More even distribution of light, able to place bulbs closer to garden."

Im leaning more towards the 600 w. Just dont want to be down the line, and wish i got the 1000 watter, know what i mean.

Ceilings are 8 ft high.

Alright so I reviewed the whole thread....

Here is my Expert recomendation (not an expert)

you have a room that you say is about 7 feet X 8 feet X 8 feet..

thats about 500CFM, so you need a fan that is close to that rating to change the air every minute...

You then should get a second fan with close to same rating for your lights for heat extraction of your air cooled hoods....

TWO fans...

as for lighting that room....

I Bet you are gonna want to have some room to get in there right...

So we are talking like 50 sq ft of floor space covered in plants right....

If you have the fans for heat extraction, you can stick as much light as will fit IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY....

Here would be what I would do....

4 600 watt DIGITAL lights... all heat extracted using about a 500-600cfm fan vented to attic or somewhere else where the hot air can be benificial...

I would also use a 500-600 CFM coupled with a Carbon filter to change the air in the room....

so there it is... if you need feel free to PM me any questions I would love to help...

My calculations on the 600 were as follows:

Yes 1000 W is greater than 600. But the 600 can be placed roughly 12 inches closer to the plants which.

Light output divided by ditance squared = lumens

1000 watts/3x3=9=111 lumens
600 watts/2x2=4=150 lumens

and some other stuff I read..but thanks for the claifictaion godess

just additional things i read....

"Q. Based on Lumen per watt Ratio what is more efficient to operate, MH or HPS?
A. HPS gives a higher lumen per watt ratio than metal halide and the bulbs often last up to twice as long. The 600 watt HPS has the highest lumen per watt ratio of any HID bulb. But for growing MH has a higher PAR value than HPS but often isn't enough in the red range of the spectrum, this is why a mix of both is required for optimal growth. Or the use of full spectrum bulbs is replacing mixing the MH with the HPS. The bulb manufacturers are doing this for you. "
"Well designed, compact system will give you years of fantastic light (remember, 600 Watt systems are the most efficient providing more lumens per watt of electricity). All cords are detachable so you can hang your light with ease. Superior light output will cover a 3' x 6' area or a 4' x 8' area. "
"I agree with potroast, 3 x 600w HPS's would be better than 4 x 400w HPs. The 600w HPS is the most efficient in terms of lumens per watt of any of the HPS systems. 3 x 600HPS's would output 3 x 90,000 lumens = 270,000 lumens, the 4 x 400w HPS's would output 4 x 55,000 lumens = 220,000 lumens. Plus the 600w systems would be only marginally more expensive to run, 3 x 5.7amps on a 120v system is 2052 watts, 4 x 400w would be 4 x 3.8 on a 120v system would be 1824 watts. So for 228 watts more you get another 50,000 lumens.
The air cooled reflectors, if set up properly would allow you to get your reflectors to within 12 inches of the plant tops without burning them, even lower depending on how efficient your ventilation system is. I think it would be a bit much to expect the vent system for the 3 air cooled hoods to also ventilate the area as well, so you'll have to set up a separate system for ventilating the area, probably with a charcoal filter.
Don't veg with the HPS's though, get some MH conversion bulbs or switchable ballasts that would allow you to switch over from HPS to MH for vegging. There are ballasts on the market than can run two lights from them, but they're not cheap. Aurora do an air cooled reflector and twin 600w ballast, but it's about 1000 USD."

What 600 watt HPS put out about 95,000LUMENS
1000 watt HPS put out 150,000 LUMENS or more..

how did you get to 111 lumens????

and MH is for VEG, HPS is for Flowering..

although a 2 to 1 ratio of HPS to MH is good for flowring....

you are seriously confusing me full metal jack with yur logic..
