Why is Racism Bad?

I think some should learn the difference between a bigot and a racist


A racist is someone who believes in the superiority of one race over another, or who acts differently (usually negatively) towards a person or a group of people because of their race. An example would be a member of the Ku Klux Klan, who espouse the superiority of the white race.

A bigot is a blinkered, narrow-minded person, usually also very intolerant and unable to see anyone else's point of view. People can be bigoted about things that have nothing to do with race, for example, religion or sexual orientation. A prime example would be Archie Bunker from the old television sitcom "All in the Family."

All racists are bigots, but by no means are all bigots racist. That is, a racist is a bigot against a particular race or every race except for his/hers.

I was talking about this with my heads last night!

They put on a show starring Taye Diggs and I enjoyed every second of it! Then they started talking about how its like 24 and although everyone I know watches 24, I have never seen an episode.

As a child, when I thought we were all the same, I watched tons of Full House, Perfect Strangers, etc. Then as an older child/teenager things started to change and I started to unconsciously prefer movies and shows that have people I either look like or can relate to. I don't make it a point to speak out loud about it.

More recently I've found indy comedies from New Zealand that feature Samoan actors that I have quite enjoyed and even some Bollywood movies done completely in English. Its easier when they look like me.

The problem with language is that it is constantly evolving due to its usage. Where I live, and obviously not everyone uses it like this, but many of the young black youths that I associate with have a very militant point of view on the word "racist." They use it to represent anything having to do with race.

Ex: You tell me a story about a young man who passed by you and said hello. If at any point you tell me that young man is black or white, these kids will call you a racist. And it's not necessarily a negative thing.

I knew the difference between bigot and racist. In general, I just talk shit for fun. Thanks for typing that all out though. Archie Bunker's the boss. 8)

I wish it was that easy. I bet you if you speak with an American native they'll tell you the same. America was form by people England found less desirable if you can remember American history. Remember Hitler? He tried to conquer the world with racism. What the fuck happened to him?How did we get this land? By slaughtering women and children who's skin was brown and damn near wiped out their race to get this land. Lets keep it real.
 
Yes it happened... but that was not in my generation or in your generation... I had nothing to do with killing any aborigines mate, I have never killed a bloke in my life. It has absolutely nothing to do with me... And being Australian Mate, Not American I understand exactly what you're saying... Our history being so much more recent than yours...

One of my best friends is white. His attitude is a little of the opposite but gets the same result (peace with the situation. to put it simple.)

He's like,"I'm proud to have come from that dark anglo history. I'm also proud to be part of the generation thats making a change."
 
what people fail to realize is that race didnt play a factor in any of the "land takin" in history. think about it the most advanced civilization started takin over shit. it didnt matter what color people were on the land it was the land itself that caused the killin. you think if native americans back then or africans woulda been the top race they wouldnt have started to take over shit? its not our fault as white people that we got ahead of everyone, but the fault is us killin for a very greedy reason. im african at my base just like every other human on this planet is. so why fight with each other over as shannon said shit that happened generations ago when we can focus on movin foward together.

The problem is your definition of what "ahead" means.

I think any culture that can live off of the land, respects other living things, and don't have a strong desire for conquest is way ahead of our culture. But I'm kind of a nut, so who gives a shit?

when i say ahead its simple bein more advanced in a civilization standpoint. youre right tho any culture can be that way and thats how we should be now lookin back at the past, but mother fuckers are greedy.

Best definition of racism I have ever heard "Prejudice+Power"
everyone can be prejudice, based off of skin color etc.
But to claim racism there has to be some kind of systematic discrimination.
