How Does Chitosan Help Cloning Plant Cuttings?
Since the cuttings have no roots they have a harder time getting water.
Research has shown that plants given a foliar spray of Chitosan Oligosaccharide need up to 46% less water.
Dosage (Optimal concentration ranging from 50-2000 ppm)

No, that's without any chelating agent. Note that i don't do DWC , but as far i know you could go up to 2000 ppm.
I'm from Europe, but:

Regarding your statement of diminishing photon flux, i am not shore if you are referring to led light systems. If you are then i would advice to read this white paper of Cree:

And perhaps dig in to the inverse...
actually, i have only grown with HPS for over 20 years, and still do.
The high PPF of the HPS will only be sufficient with short plants, regarding inter-nodal spacing and stem elongation. With bigger plants HPS will induce SAS, again associated with crop yield.
Even Gavita says to supplement...
@ Wietefras
I read your post on the lepton flir. It completely tempered my enthusiasm for my recent purchase. I just ordered the radiometric version a couple of days ago with the intention to log some data from it, or perhaps even use it as a sensor. Do you also have the radiometric version...
@ Hybridway
Quantity x Quality x uniformity is the formula for optimal photosynthetic action potential in my handbook.
HPS low cri is a bitch when it comes to inter-nodal spacing and stem elongation, wich are both related to crop yield

There is some science that backs up some of the statements of the original poster

In this study, blue light has been shown to trigger both a qualitative signalling effect enabling normal photosynthetic functioning of cucumber...
