Carbon filters...life span and refurbishing?

I've tried Can, Phresh, and Kootenay. Kootenay lasted the longest and is still working. The Phresh didn't make it thru a single cycle; anyway they seem to be unavailable in US now. I got it from Amazon, and suspect it may have been a knock-off.

Interesting, it's a bit of a minefield buying a filter, it seems, hence my interest in buying one that can be re-filled, as they are not exactly cheap for a tiny tent like mine!

At least then the filter is only as good as the carbon granuels/pellets it's re-filled with, just seems a bit of a waste buying a big bulky filter every cycle.
Not just the expense, plus the difficulty of disposing of such a bulky item decreetly and :? hopefully in an environmentally friendy way..

I purchased a 50lb bag of palletized carbon and repacked all of my filters. It worked….. I’m still using them and it has saved me a ton of money.
I'm seriously considering doing the same thing, my carbon filter is a failry standard cannister type filter... I'll see if I can gently 'bust' the top off and see if it's viable to refill it duct tape it back up and re-use it!

Ive run AC infinity filters for a few years, and while some have outlasted others, theyve all gone 2 full grow cycles before crapping out.

Going to install the refillable unit here soon, so maybe next year Ill have a verdict on the actual refilled functionality.

I'm going to have to try refilling once. I've got two spent 6"x24s (soon to be three) I hate to throw out. Guess I need to shop around for some carbon. Can I recycle the old carbon, I wonder?

mind posting the link where you purchased the pelletized carbon, also what did you use to repack the carbon did you use something that vibrates to compact it or?

Lots of bulk activated carbon on ebay, no link needed. Yes I do have a paint shaker to get all of it in the the filter sacks. Every carbon filter I have has a bag inside.

I’ll say something else… I made a giant carbon filter from a 30 gal barrel…. It only moderately worked but repacking store bought filters seems to work well

One more question, I'm currently set up like the pic on the left, but to make more space in the tent, I want to swap it round like the pic on the right..
Anyone have opinions on this? I can't see it would make any difference to filtration?View attachment 5382985
Mine is set up like the one on the right - except, I have no vertical free space, so I'm running from one of the holes on the side.

I did like the right picture except I mounted my exhaust fan directly onto my carbon filter.

It gives me much more room in my tent. It's working great so far.

My experience over 20 years of growing and using filters is that most suck but there are a few out there that can last at least a year if you are running them 24/7.

Worst filters IMO are AC Infinity. You get what you pay for. Then Vivosun, Gorilla, I-power and all the cheap light sellers like Mars Hydro and the rest. Can filters are kind of in the mid range now.

Best filters IMO are Phat and Phresh. Phresh has relocated their business to the US and will hopefully make the same product soon.

oooh good to hear Phresh is coming to the US. I need to grab a few soon. Every time I decide to say F it I will try a new type of filter (instead of buying a new phresh) I regret it lol most recently the AC filter.

Another vote for phresh filters and for mounting the fan directly, it helps with noise and its convenient to hang.

I've read ozone helps cleans them, in the same article it said ozone helps but it isn't as good as steam?

You can regenerate the carbon by heating it and driving off what it has absorbed. Be aware it will be nasty. Not possible with plastic unless you remove the carbon.

Carbon adsorbs, not absorbs, and to get it to the temp to re-activate would require a temperature of 450C or 842F. Not happening without a special oven.
