Any tips on not being a seed whore??

There's still a few 4/20 sales going on, and it's so very tempting to fill up the shopping carts.
It's all I can do to keep myself under control
I have enough genetics to keep me busy for probably years, since I do moms and clones. I don't grow packs but one or two of a strain at a time and if I find a keeper I run it till something better shows up. As you can imagine, this doesn't leave alot of room for new genetics to pop in. Limited room, limited power, limited time. I also wanna do some of my own crosses.
So how do you maintain sanity when there's just SOOOOO much out there?

I dropped a grand on genetics. I do the same clones only. I get poorer luck with new phenos though. I really dont have capacity for many mothers. Its more so insurance for restarting. Im pretty lucky with my first mom shes fun to work with no down sides at all. Hard to find a replacement.

Done shopping. I just remind myself theyre perishable. Being flower rosin only, I really need consistent results or I dont get paid for my work. Even being smoker if you tend to get hermies like me. I cant get seeds either or my rosin will be screwed. Not speculation either, you actually press seeds to make lotions etc so that otherwise would be in the rosin.

I made a list of different strain “families” that I generally target, looking for good crosses or representations of those parent strains whenever possible - bubba kush/kushs, northern lights, chem, diesel/sour, blueberry, G13, NL5xHaze, “the white” family, and certain heirlooms like “afghans”. If I see a desired pack at a great price, I snag it. If I have enough packs in that “family” I pass on it, unless it’s something special I want to reproduce. I try to stick to a handful of proven breeders, reminding myself that a lot of scammers exist too. Still, I buy way too many seeds so it’s not a perfect system, lol.

Two thoughts, I don't feel as bad because at least I am helping to keep talented breeders in business, and I actively share seeds and plants with other local growers! We try to grow different things and share, so we can experience more variety.

Start a breeding project with a clear goal. This has helped me chuck a lot of the seeds I recently aquired. Im keeping
MTF
SFV OG
SSH
Oaxacan
Malawi

Just these 5 strains will produce virtually an endless amount of variation. I can also be more generous in popping seeds, and very aggressive with the culling process.
I recently grew 27 plants, and chucked all but 4. Kept only 1 for pollination.

Needless to say, I have another 5 strains that I will be growing for pleasure. Classics like Northern lights from the late 80s, Blueberry, etc.

I noticed that last winter I was spending a lot of time shopping around for specific genetics. I came to the conclusion that its better to trade beans with respected growers. I dont trust most seedbanks. Their creations are starting to look like cookie cutter copies.

well, sell a lot of the collection, get money back,
give free to grower friends many more, especially the seeds that we make,
, all seeds have duration time,
seeds are not eternal,

stop buying for a few years, don't spend money on deals,

just follow your own crosses/selection for a while, I try not to drive more than 3-4 different genetics at best, rotation,

the last time I bought seeds was in 2022,
I haven't bought for 3 years,
greetings

Ppl always say they can't get seeds to pop but generally I don't have that problem. In fact about 6-8 months ago I got a single seed to pop without any issues, it was Super Silver Grapefruit from Dynasty Genetics, and it was the 1st pack put into my collection nearly 8 years ago lol.

I don't refrigerate them or nothing, literally my seed packs sit in Tupperware containers inside of my safe. No special storage really. Yet, every time I decide to grow I grab a pack of seeds and every seed I soak pops within 3 days
