It doesn't need to breathe. The only issue would be choking the stalk as it grows. I use duct tape because it stretches. I rarely ever take the tape back off. Sometimes it comes undone on its own.
Ok I duct taped the hell out of it, it happened last night at like 5 and it looks this morning as if nothing happened so I guess I caught it right on time
