Okay, the ballast only came with the heavy white box and a cable to connect that to the wall. Nothing to connect my bulbs to the box. So I just have to buy a connector?

I've never actually grown plants, but I believe they will be fine, although I can't say from experience. I've read extensively on the subject, however. You did say you were using a 400w bulb, so maybe give it a little more time for the new tops to show?

Yes, that's how people keep mother plants for cloning. They just keep them on a 12/12 forever and just keep taking cuttings. EDIT: I meant 24/0 or 18/6. I don't want anyone reading this and receiving wrong information on my behalf.
