I'd love to see that test, thick vs thin. I'm thinking paste isn't even close to being thermally conductive as the alum. so a thick layer wouldn't be that great, I could be wrong.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I take apart many of the LED bulbs and they all have terrible connections to heatsinks, with crappy glue etc. They run hotter than hell but last forever. Usually the drivers inside the bulbs die before the LEDs ever will, and that's because they're inclosed in...

You really don't need a lot of paste. Just about the size of a grain of rice. Then take a credit card and keep working it each direction. Then just rotate left and right pressing into the final spot. Less is better in this case. Basically the same as CPU's. People used to make the same mistakes...

    A Thread On Tapping

if you can afford it try to invest in drill press, around $80 for a nice one on amazon etc. Not just for taps but they come in handy for many things. They drill slow and straight, and bits last much longer. Hand drills I always used to break those small bits due to my unsteady hands and high...

or maybe that's not the reason, since I knew they were on vacation and 5 days after they returned they claimed they didn't receive the payment.

yeah I really don't think it's a huge issue for aluminum, being how soft it is. If the screw you're using is stronger than aluminum it will most likely dig into it.

    DiY LED - Cree CXA3070

Thanks. Yeah I only got them because I had free credit on amazon. I got 3 and hooked them up to Vero 18's, and they seem to run fine at 1200. It also said they were drawing 32V. so I'm not so sure on how accurate the 29v rating is.

Supra, what do you think of this driver? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EAXP1ZW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 it claims 94% efficient at full load, does this compare well to the meanwells?

I paid them cash a month ago and they ripped me off. I would advise against purchasing from them. On top of that they decided to go away for over 2 weeks and never reply to emails.

    Heatsinks for DIY LED lamps

sears has a 4-40 tap/ drill bit combo for around $4. I've used it for around 20 taps and it's still like new. I think more important is the hole you first drill, use a drill press if you can, and make sure to back it out 1/4 for every revolution. No reason to use anything else but a hand tap for...

I would think high temp silicone would work well, it can take temps up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

great price and great driver.. but, not sure that's really for amateurs. I know I wouldn't trust myself around 425Vdc. Just a hobby for me, no sense in killing yourself to save a few bucks.

    DIY COB reflectors

I've wondered about those round reflectors. Wouldn't they trap a lot of heat directly into the COB that would otherwise just flow to the sides? would be interesting to see some tests with and without.

lol well same could be said for any driver running fans. Multiple 12v or 5v drivers just increase the risk of failure, instead of one solid power source.
