1/2 soil 1/2 hydroponics setup--new idea for veg. stage

here are some thoughts, sometimes plants can be over/under watered and over/under nuted.

imagine taking a 2liter bottle and cutting off the top, then purchasing a very cheap and course filter that can be placed in the center of the bottle. nothing fine so that roots can freely grow thru filter.

as far as mounting the filter, there would lots of different ways, which i dont need to describe...use ur imagination it cant be harder than growing bud anyway.

before putting soil mix in top of bottle, put water w. nutes in the bottom half of bottle just below the filter area. the place soil mix on top.

as the roots grow, they will surpass the filter and reach the water. reduce watering of soil (not completely). as the roots get longer and surpass a 1-2cm, lower the water level an inch so that the water just touches the tips of roots. lower the water level by creating small holes (width of pencil) along the perimeter of the bottle just beneath the filter section. this will allow u to tilt the bottle a bit and release some water, also creating an air pocket. w. many holes along the perimeter, the fan you have blowing will be able to pump good air into the bottle giving the roots oxygen which is reduced significantly in soil (thus hydroponics was created). as the roots get longer, keep lowering the water level to force them to grow more and creating more of a pocket to give the roots O2.

i attached a diagram i drew....what do ppl think? i thought this up just tonight since im going to be starting a new plant soon.

i thought of this as a way to make watering simple, significantly increase O2 to the roots, without having an expensive setup (hydroponic or O2 pump).

also, from what ive read, a large root system will produce a large plant. also, by using the water tank, u can control nutes very easily. if ur plant has signs of over/under nuting, then u can put more or dilute as you please. also, you would be able to save on nutes bc it's not being wasted by soaking up into soil that the roots dont even touch.

seeing this pic gave me the idea of doing this on a small scale for the veg. stage of growing.

i was thinking that i could v. easily allow the soil to dry and do a complete transpant into a pure hydroponic setup.

if the plant is healthy, i presume that the "shock" it will experience from being re-rooted will not be that bad at all. the benefits of hydroponics will compensate for this. ive also considered making a "basket" for the soil portion of the plant so that i can keep the soil medium just to limit or not disturb the root growth in the soil.

what do you do when the roots in the water rot because of no o2 and this sounds like a stoned idea wich i've had plenty but that doesn't mean it will work. makeing watering easy hmmm i thought watering was pretty easy

the roots wont rot in the water bc it's exposed to the air. it's not a stoner idea, it's mimicking a hydroponic setup w. things you find at home. it's cheap and it's not meant to make watering easy. it's meant to reduce problems by eliminating the soil.

ive transplanted my plant of 2mon in this type of setup (w. no soil) and it's doing great.

srry bro don't mean to get on your bad side i just thought you said it was a way of making watering simple, it's not much simpler than just dumping water on a in a pot of soil. hey if it works for ya keep on keepin on. i just don't really see how it would be worth doing but maybe im missing somthing i been growing in soil for almost a decade and just started with hydro and so far i am thinking soil is fool proof once you get the hang of it and the more complicated it is the more of a pain in the ass it is. if it gives you amazing results good for you, but do some side by side grows and see if it's really worth it if you can. im not convinced but you may have come up with something to complicated for a middle aged hippie. :joint:

oh yea and with no pump and just an air gap your roots will die in stagnant water you gotta inject oxygen into that water and the roots gotta touch it to get the nutes so i don't know i must be missing somthing???????

nice quote use, the ACT of watering is not difficult, how, when and w. what make it difficult.

as far as having an O2 pump, ive thought about that and dont have much to say. that's takes money. my intentions are to increase air/o2 to the roots. as far as stagnant water, this is more of a problem in ponds or things of that sort bc there's a crap ton more bacteria than can fester and multiply. ive had the intention of replacing the water every few days though.

to FUNK, u could def. keep in flowering stage too. except u may need to upgrade bottles im not sure.

i was also v. tired of lugging around this giant plant from outside and then to my closet.

i used to a trashcan so that i could increase root growth. boy did this work, this was a full size kitchen trashcan and the roots reached all the way to the bottom, the sides and even near the top of the soil.
