I could easily use a 20 gallon instead, or something bigger you know. Does anyone know the best size to use for 3 plants?

20 galon is better. It could work on a 6 galon... put it this this way.. when using soil.. a 3 galon pot, 1 plant uses only like 1/2 of the pot to fil with roots.

in water.. there is the whole 6 galon it could use... but on the real maybe just use 4-5

i would say go with a bigger rubbermaid no less than a 90 litre and let your roots hang freely i had a 10gallon rubbermaid and it was gonna for the first 3 weeks.

i got 4 girls in a 90 litre rubbermaid DWC with 2 x 12" airstones and a 240 gallon/perhour submerge pump.

and man my roots are 3 feet long and my plants are growing over a half inch a day now

just hit 12 inches today.

planted all on dec 20,2007

Specs:
1000watt MH
and nothing just Advance Nutrients on my shelf
