Ok so I was wondering... if im growing say like 4 or 5 plants under a 400W MH, and I wanna take a few clones from them , obviously the MH is gonna be quite high if the main plants are around 2feet to 2 1/2 feet tall. Will this stretch the clones? or will it be ok if the light is that far from them, because I need to have the light on both the main plants , and the clones.

Its this simple...Keep your lights 6-8 inches from the tops of your main plants. As far as ther clones go, put them on something like a box so that they are able to receive adequate light. The whole idea is to make the clones at an equal distance away from the lights as your main plants. You can do this by bringing them closer to the light...Is this gonna work?

I wouldn't worry about stretching clones. If you've only just taken a cutting they want indirect light until they've properly rooted. If they get too much light before this occurs they'll lose more water by evaporation than the roots can take up and they'll wilt and die. Many root with a low powered CFL which seems a safer compared to a high powered, high heat, MH. Happy growing!

i would say if you have space go get a tube fluorescent set up (sell special grow bulbs for this at any local hydro store) . i use a 400w mh as well and it is at about 4 ft now, and i would think they would get enough light, also when you start flowering you are gonna need to keep light on the clones as well. what bulb do you use with the mh? i just got and agrosun gold and it is beasting for flowering. or do u switch to hps conversion?

Just get some CFL's and grow the clones to 8 inches, then go to the MH for the rest of the veg.

Hey Socom, I don't think anyone else has answered this in this way, but specifically when the clones are growing they will not stretch as long as they are getting adequate light. Since a 400w MH is pretty powerful I don't think that they would stretch AT ALL, reason being they will have enough light so they don't need to stretch. If a plant outside is getting enough sunlight it doesn't need to reach for it, where as a plant in a forest would probably be tall and stretchy competing with trees.

Hope this helps :)

They will start stretching after they are rooted... You will have to raise them up to match the rest of the canopy once you have some decent roots.. Ive done this before and i noticed some serious "leaning" towards the bulb after about 2 weeks... Honestly very similiar to what you described. I fixed the issue with a small table underneath the clones. Then used 3 phone books and removed one phone book at a time keeping the canopy as even as i could... Make sense?
