A couple Q's about DWC SCROG

So ive been poking around this site for a year or 2 now and have a few successful DWC grows under my belt. I enjoy the challenge of seeing how much i can yield w/ the fewest amount of plants possible. My last grow was 1 plant in a 5g bucket that was vegged for 8 days, flowered for 50, and harvested almost 6oz.

Now my latest plan is to take 4 clones of Aroma from CH9 seeds, each plant will be in its own 14g tub and 6in net pot with a 30g pump and 2 8in air stones. I plan to build a frame out of small pvc pipe to put a wire fence across the top of all 4 plants about a foot or so above them. I will be running a 400w HPS and 2 T12 flouros for side lighting. All this will be going in a home made tent in the corner of my room that hasnt been built yet. I'm thinking of around 4x4x10 or 5x5x10.
Now for my Q's
1. This will be my first SCROG attempt and i was thinking of vegging them until the entire screen is pretty much full and then flower them. my thinking is that all the side branches that develop along the screen will become tops when budded and if big enough, essentaily become its own small plant. So i would be turning 4 plants into 32 or so smaller plants. Does this sound right to anyone else or am i just stoned??
2. With the screen in place the tubs are no longer movable to change the water. I have plumbed drains in buckets in the past and have had nothing but problems with leaks and what not and have found it much easier and better for my nerves(i live in an apartment) to avoid putting holes in the bottom portion of the tubs. One idea that i came up w/ was to put a small 150gph pump in each tub. When it comes time to change the water i would simply plug the pump in and pump the water into an empty tub to be discarded. Anyone else have some tips or tricks to changing water when not being able to move the tubs around?

Now with this set-up i would like to see anywhere from 8 to 12 oz per plant. I also may add Co2 if my new job works out. With the Co2 i would definitely want to see at least 10 oz per plant.

I owe all that i have learned to this site and i thank all of you that have gotten me here. I think this setup would work very nicely and produce the yields i want but i want to hear what you guys think and what you would change and do differently. Thanks in advance guys!

10oz per plant with a 400w and 2 flouros isnt gonna do it.... you should scratch the co2 and buy a bigger light, or more lights.

For a tent ten feet long i would suggest buying another 400 watter. two of those should produce a nice amount of bud.... or you could go with cfls if you cant afford to deal with the heat issues

The tent would be 10 feet tall not wide, i will only be covering a 4x4 area and i dont have to use all 10 feet i just have high ceilings so i figured why not have the extra space just incase. and the 2 t12 flouros are each a 4 foot 2 bulb 42w unit and i will most likley have a 3rd for the back wall and each will have a pink flouro and a full spectrum. Also every wall will be mylar.
I will take your suggestion though and invest in maybe a 1000w cool tube set-up instead of co2. although i am concerned about the heat. If you guys were to add some CFL's instead what would you sugest?

nice looking plant man, wish i could hlp you with your questions but im doing my first grow as we speak. still learning! could you explain to me how you only vegged for 8 days? how is this possible, at 8 days my plant was less than 8 inches! how early can you start flowering and still have such a large plant?

Hey uponone!

I’m about 4 weeks into flowering on my first ScrOG and had to deal with the same issues you’re looking at.
You seem to have a good grasp of the ScrOG. I would say let the screen get about 75% full and then go to 12/12; this will allow you to continue filling up the screen during the first 1-2 weeks of “stretch” before the plants start flowering.

As far as tub maintenance…there are several ways to address this issue. In my opinion the best way is to build a recirculation system, where the grow tubs are connected to a central tub with a pump in it. Gives you access to the reservoir for everything from nute changes to cooling. This is what I’m going to do with my next ScrOG. But you don’t want plumbing (I’ve never had a problem with leaks using the proper fittings and liberal amounts of Plumber’s Goop, but…), so...

Another way is to secure the screen to the lid of the tub. This is what I did with my current ScrOG, when, while stoned, I forgot about the screen I just put on and carefully threaded my branches through, and I lifted the lid of my reservoir to check something and snapped several branches. Since you’re talking about 4 plants in their own tubs in a 4X4 area, I would build 4 2X2 PCV screen setups and secure each one to the tub lid using PCV pipe. Basically, I took 2 PCV end-caps, drilled holes in the top of them, and screwed and epoxied the end-caps to each end of the tub top. I then cut 2 pipes the appropriate length and used them to connect to the screen frame. This allows you to lift the lid, plant, and screen as one unit. And if you build 4 of them, one for each plant, you kind of have a modular system, where you can move the reservoirs and plants at will.

If you don’t want to do that, you can also just siphon the water out of the tubs using a cheap siphon kit found in most auto-parts stores.

As far as pulling 900 or more grams from 400-500 watts of lights…well, I believe most people’s goal is 1 gram/watt…
