Hi, I'm new to growing outdoors, this is my first season to have a budding female :) but I was wondering since I'm doing a few little ones in my back yard and I was wondering if there is basic upkeep i should take in prevention of pests and whatnot

You could spread out diotamacious earth, at reg intervals. And nolo bait for grasshoppers. Nolo bait is a parasite that only kills grasshoppers, and they are cannibalistic, so a little goes a long way. Won't harm birds. Good stuff. And stock
Up on bt (for the caterpillars). Make your own compost with grass clippings from the yard and kitchen scraps(no brassicas;cabbage, kale etc. ) and start amending your soil. A healthy soil will help fend off nonbeneficials. Also
Think about mycorhizzae, it will make a beneficial symbiosis with not only your yard but your babies when you put them out. A strong healthy plant will need minimal maintenance when growing outdoors with some prep time! Hope this helps or even gives a few ideas.
