Ballast question

i have this type of ballast.

now i understand it says it gets hot, but it has only been plug in maybe 3 hours and if i touch the black part i cant even hold my hand there a second before i have to pull it away. is this normal for this type of ballast?

Yep. Magnetic ballast coils do get hot.

Nah, just take common sense precautions like don't stack paper around it. If you're at all worried, put a small fan blowing on it. But you should be fine. I ran 6 1K magnetics with the coils exposed for a few years with no probs. All my ballasts were modified high bay lights.

THat is one odd ballast haha. Yes the actual step-up transformer will get way to hot to touch. Like jack said, just take precaution as to what is around the ballast. Most ballast will have the transformer enclosed so there is no worry of touching it.

lol.. good to know, i will be gone all day tomorrow i will still be a little worried but i have taken all the right steps to keeping it as safe as possible.
