Hey guys. First time grower here and I am stumped. I have 5 girls growing outdoors in the Midwest, no knowledge on strain as they were just for fun, to see what I could do. All 5 are in early flowering stage but one is just not like the others.

All stipules are browning on inside edges closest to stem, and my calyxes are curling into the stipules. There are very FEW white hairs and it appears any hairs coming out of calyx have a reddish brown tiny vs white. Majority of the new bud sites seem to be made up of stipules and leaves?? What's really got me is there are a few branches that are performing normally with bright white hairs and trichromes developing on the leaves. I should add there are trichomes developing in the discolored bud sites as well, just no hairs.

Thought maybe bugs, found some bright orange mites but turns out those are predatory mites so I want to keep those, lol. The plant looks healthy besides the bud sites. I'm really hoping someone can give me some ideas as to what is happening. I have inspected calyxes and she doesn't seem to be herming out, but I'm brand new to the game and perhaps I'm wrong??

What are the details of your grow?
Indoor/outdoor, soil or grow media type, watering and feeding details. If you give a lot of those type (: of details someone will probably chime in with help

Thank you for replying! I am growing outdoors in in 5 Gallon aeration bags in organic nature's care potting mix/worm castings/fish bone meal/kelp meal and blood meal nutrients added at time of final transplant. I was using jacks classic bi weekly until about Aug 7 then switched to jacks classic bloom - half strength, once a week. However this last feeding cycle changed to banana peel tea (they LOVED this btw) I don't really have a watering schedule as I base off of weight of pot before watering. The leaves show no sign of deficiency, I hope this helps. I inspect daily and all I can see is a very random little black gnat (not a fungus gnat) and nothing to make me thing there is an infestation. however the presence of the predatory mites tells me there may be a spider mite somewhere, but I can't find one to save my life. She is the smallest of my 5 girls and the stinkiest and she doesn't even have any actual buds

You have bug issues and powdery mildew starting. Also this is going to be a rough year for bud rot in the midwest (at least that's the feeling I have). So start spraying and antifungal like potassium bicarbonate and alcohol. It will also kill the bugs. I would also add some spinosad before it gets much further into flowering. Where approximately in the midwest?
Good luck friend!

Possibly caterpillars or maybe a burrowing bug that got into the stem?
Hmmm. I do see signs of something nibbling on a few leaves which told me time to get some BT, but haven't seen any caterpillar droppings or physical worms. Now I'm intrigued about a burrowing bug in the stem. Are there other signs I can look for that would indicate this is a possibility? I inspect the stem, don't see any holes or slits like when I get squash Vine boars in my zucchini, but a few markings

The boring bugs are moth larvae and you will find a hole in the stem with frass (brownish bug poo) coming out of it. Bt will help prevent more of them. So will spinosad. But if you find the hole, you can cut the stem open lengthwise with a razor blade to get the little suckers out and kill them. Don't worry the plant will live through the surgery.

Thank you! I'm in the NW suburbs of Chicago. I forgot to mention that when I first noticed the discoloration, I also noticed orange mites and freaked out. Sprayed with Castile soap/water and blasted with hose. But, Upon further research they are said to be predatory mites (shiny, pear shape, orange, super fast) and those to my understanding are good??
With the alcohol/potassium bicarbonate, is this safe to spray on the flowers? I'm super new with all of these names. However, I know from experimentation, alcohol makes some decent isohash so I worry it would diminish potency.

I use it all the time and yes it's safe to use throughout flowering . The isopropyl alcohol is adjusted to less than 35% so it won't damage the trichomes.
I use a 1/2 gallon of 70%isopropyl alcohol mixed with an equal volume of water mixed with 2-3tsp potassium bicarbonate and 1/4-1/2 tsp castile soap.

Thank you so much for all this info. I will check the stem in more depth in the morning. With the spinosad, is this safe to use all the way to harvest??

Start checking with scope. At least 60x. Russet mites cause pistol damage.
So russet mites are also known as "predatory mites" which are good, but they are bad for my girls, is this right?? Lol. I definitely have orange pear/tear shaped mites but was leaving them as I honestly thought they were helping naturally with spider mites and thripes. I cringe seeing a bug on my bud so I don't have a problem getting rid of them whatsoever, just trying to understand that's what I have (russet mites)

They say it is but I don't. Some states test for it in commercial pot and if levels are too high their whole crop fails. That's why I use the alcohol mixture, once spinosad shouldn't be used anymore. It kills bugs and helps treat and prevent powdery mildew and bud rot.
I am in Illinois too over on the west side of the state by the Mississippi. And the weather this year has me upping my game. Beyond using the alcohol mixture I am adding a biological called Cease. It also helps to fight off bud rot and powdery mildew. I put too much time into growing my plants, to not do all I can to make sure they make it through as healthy as possible.

Is there any way you can post a pic. You need to get a positive ID.

And no, russets are definitely not a beneficial. They're soul crushing little demons and from my understanding, once they take hold it takes a very direct rigorous plan of action to fully eradicate them.

No russet mites are not predatory mites. They are very small and suck. They are elongated and are way smaller than spider mites. You need magnification to see the russets.
The plant you posted could still have spinosad used on it as it has just started flowering.

Spinosad is relatively safe. I've also read a lot of good things about Pure Crop 1. Large and small scale gardeners are swearing by its effectiveness and it can be used up to harvest. Just be mindful of phototoxicity.

I absolutely can post a pic in the morning, fingers crossed they aren't russets. They are bigger than a spider mite, so my hopes are still high. This is an awesome community, so happy I found you guys!

Oh, perfect!
Do you mind me asking how often you apply this mixture ?

If those are bigger than a spider mite you might be in luck. Russets are tiny. I think the only time you can see them with the naked eye is when there are thousands infesting the plant material.
Got my fingers crossed for ya.

This is what I use in flower and I apply it at least once a week. If I feel the need more. I have used it up to five times in a week.
Before flowering and during early flowering I will tank mix spinosad and or BT with it.

If you ever end up with spider mites in flower this will help. It gets used every other day for a week then every third day for another week or until the problem is gone. Spray everything in, on and around the plant.. It has helped several people I know get to harvest and has the added benefit of helping to prevent and/or fight fungal infections too.
