Closet CFL grow...

I'm a long time SMOKER/newbie GROWER who's finally had it with HIGH prices and shitty WEED. I figure its HIGH time i grow my own. I have basic knowledge of the process and i have been researching quite a bit too. I'll be GROWING with soil and CFL's...i made a light hood with 5 Y adapters for a total of 10 bulbs(half are 6500/5000).I've got steady temps at 80-85F with good circulation. Right now i am experimenting with some SCHWAG seeds that have been GROWING now for 3 weeks on an 18/6 schedule but i think they are not good indoor PLANTS, as they look GREEN and healthy but they are abnormally small for 3 weeks, which could be my fault for not raising light....ok, enuff intro, to the questions.......

1. recommended SEED bank to use
2. advice on an easy indoor GROWING strain to purchase
3. advice on soils/ferts(from Home Depot or similar)

Any advise is much appreciated

Life's too short to smoke bad weed!

1. Not sure if links are allowed or advisable here, so I'm PMing you a link to a review site for seed banks.
2. The seed banks I've looked at usually indicate which strains are better for which purposes. Personally I'm looking at mostly indica, beyond that just going to pick what looks fun.
3. I keep hearing good things about Fox Farm products, particularly Ocean Forest soil. I'm using dollar store dirt and MG bloom fert and it's doing okay. ;)

I gave my first dose of fertilizer after I transplanted. They did okay but I don't know if you're supposed to do that. (Stress?)

I'm a noob too, the High Times grow guide is helping a lot. I got it in the magazine section at the bookstore, lol.

Appreciate the reply, i was beginning to wonder. thanks for the link....from everything i've read, Attitude seems like a good choice, so i guess i just need to place my order. I did some searching and found a couple stores in my area that sell Fox Farms products(lucky me) so i'll be making a trip there soon.
When all comes together i'll start a grow journal with pics as this will be my first, so all can enjoy the fruits of my labor!(ok...just pics, i get to enjoy fruits)
Later

WOW! Something must be in the air. I'm also a newbie about to start my first grow. I just ordered seeds from Attitude and a bubbleponics from stealth and I am feeling like a kid on X-mas waiting to get his presents. CFL's are the perfect light for my situation. I am just gonna grow some personal bud and see how it goes. Any advice or tips are very welcome.

As a new grower myself with one harvest under my belt, I have to say that that first bong rip/doob/blunt/bowl of YOUR OWN GROWN marijuana is a very refreshing, exhilarating & liberating experience.

KillerRedd, I use Nirvana for my seeds, and haven't had a bad experience with them at all. Seeds were perfect, and fast & discreet shipping. And as far as indoor strains go (especially cfl growing) indica strains are your best bet. They keep a managable short bushy stature, and cfls dont have the canopy penetrating power of HPS lighting systems, so being short makes the job easier on the cfl's light to reach most of the plant. That results in more even bud production from top down, instead of the top getting all the "light love". Any further than that as far as strains go, it's all in what you are looking for in your high, so read the descriptions and judge from there. As for soil, I use good ol' Scotts Moisture Control with no issues( just gotta add perlite or the stuff doesn't drain FOR CRAP when ya water it). Nutes I use for veg: just Alaska fish fertilizer. flowering nutes: good ol' Miracle Grow Bloom(1/4 strength to avoid the infamous "MG Burn") and Nirvana from Advance Nutrients for the first month. Remaining flowering time it gets Fox Farms Cha-Ching and Nirvana from Advance Nutrients.

Wish the best, and will interject advise when my "new grower" knowledge allows.

Oh, and last week and half is nute free, and i flush with plain water. I didn't bother with the molasses flush, which is said to improve flavor and give some last minute carbs to try and beef up the budsites in the last week while flushing. People swear by it though.

Another noob here :)...on my 2nd CFL grow with 2 105 actual watt cfls with clip-on shop reflectors.

I used molasses throughout flowering on my 1st grow...2 hindu skunk clones... 1 Tbsp per gallon every other watering... it feeds the bacterial "herd" in the soil. I flushed with plain water the last two waterings...flushing is controversial, I haven't made up my mind on it yet. I was pretty pleased with my harvest, got about 1.5 oz of tight buds and 1/4 z of wispy ones. I topped em once and did slight LST....I plan on being much more aggressive with the LST this time around.

Welcome to RIU, It's good to see more CFL noobs here. :weed:

thanks for the replies...just ordered my beans from Attitude yesterday, now i play the waiting game. On my bagseed experimental grow...i've had a couple plants under lights for 3 weeks now and though they look good(3 sets of leaves) they seem to be very short( about 1.5in). They're pretty close, about 2 inches, from the light...yet i know i dont want to stretch them either....and when should i consider transplanting them(theyre in cups)?

my beans are on the way!!! Till then i figure i'd ask a few ???'s....my closet is 4x6x8 and my plan is to separate into 2 chambers...lower for mothers/clones/seedlings/veg and upper for flowering. My ? is...would tube flouro's be better to use in the smaller enclosed vegg chamber. I believe they would fit better but i also want to use the most efficient flouro be it tube or cfl. Any ideas?

100_2146.jpg100_2144.jpg100_2148.jpg100_2145.jpg100_2147.jpghere's a couple pics of my setup...and those are my experimental bagseed plants. Not really putting alot of effort into these but more of just convincing myself that it can be done. There is one Indica plant i might grow out....it started life with a beautiful purlpe tint already and getting fatter by the day.

Dude you should drop the cfls that is not enuf light that's why your producing only 1.5 ounces plus the shwag of a 1/4 you should be using metal halide with atleast a 400 watt ballast . For veg and use a hps for flowering and you will produce large lucious buds like around probably 8 oz to a pound depending on the strain.

Hooray!!! The time has come....my seeds have arrived, ive tweaked the closet and lights abit, and decided to try the BUDS FOR LESS method.

Lighting: 2 seperate light boards with 2 sockets each. They raise/lower independantly. Have ability to attach more if deemed necessary.
1 85watt 5000k CFL
lots of 23watt 5k and 65k CFL's

Venting: Small fan(inside)
larger fan(outside w/ ac)

Soil: MG potting soil
perlite

H2O: properly PH'd tap water

Beans: Northern Lights(10), Jock Horror(10), Royal Flush(10), 1 fem ea. of sharksbreath, cole train, and sour cream

Equip: Various size pots(2-3gallon)
Cheap PH tester
Soil meter(wet/ph/light)

So i figured being my first grow i would save the fem'd seeds for another time. I want to make sure this method works or i at least get a "first grow" or two under my belt. I'm soaking 6 seeds atm(2ea. of NL/JH/RF) separated of course. I will eventually buy some 42w's for veg and flwr. Right now i will be veg'n on top but will be veg'n underneath later so i can seal it off(light). Also in near future i will install some sort of fan in the closet ceiling with a carbon filter. I dont have to be too stealthy but i'd rather not have the whole house smelling.
Thats about all for now. Any advice or tips? Later!!!

ok...so is it my lucky day? I'm not really sure....neighbors been cleaning his garage and threw out a 175w HID luminaire and i snatched it up of course. Dont know too much about them so is it any good? If it is is i'll use it in the future, gotta stick with the lower heat cfl's for now.

i've got four seeds in soil now(JH & NL), all cracked and starting to root. The two RF's havent cracked yet so i'll give em a day or two. If they dont take im not too concerned...i dont want overload my senses my first time.
