I’m currently running a air cooled 600 watt hps with a hortilux bulb, I’m considering switching to a single 315 cmh . I usually only flower 2 plants at a time, I’m using a 4x4x6 foot tent, wondering what the advantages and disadvantages are to switching to a 315 would be

A single 315 is not enough for a 4x4.

Advantages

Better spectrum gives a better end product.
Less heat
Less power consumption.

Disadvantages.

Far smaller footprint. 2.5x2.5ft to 3x3ft depending on the hood

I know a 315 is to small to fill a 4x4 tent but I only flower a couple plants at a time, I don’t like packing my tent full of plants, I like some extra room to move around in

Two plants can easily fill a 4x4 so I went with the area. Corey's coverage estimate is pretty good. One huge plus is how awesome it is to work with your plants under white light.

Another thing I have to consider is light height, I can get my air cooled 600 12-14 inches away from the top of the plants with no issues. I haven’t read some conflicting things about the cmh light height some people say 12inches away and some say 18 inches, if I have to keep it 18 inches away all the way through flowering I definitely don’t have the ceiling height for that

I guess it depends on the hood. I could keep the cmh very close to the tops, but I had a reflector that let the hot air escape.
