Considering a variant of hempy/SIP and looking for thoughts from the hempy crowd!

So I am in the midst of resetting for another run and I have a batch of Botanicare KIND that I need to use up as it's sat for some time now.

I have been running organic soil in SIP(s) for last 3 runs and have had good results but knowing that I need to use up these nutes I was considering some DTW/coco variation for at least this 1 run to use them up.

As I was preparing things it struck me to use my containers as the drain pans I'd otherwise use anyhow (just costs me some vertical height but that's fine if I scrog as planned). Then I went on to remember oh yeah those hempys they use wicking too.

Now I'm wondering if I can use my SIP(s) loaded with coco only (well I have Bu's compost, some of the worm/coco/perlite mix, and other goodies I have the option of including). And I planned to grab some biochar as well but local shop didn't have what I wanted nor any Tupur. In my current SIPs I have 2 big wicks that touch the bottom of what amount to a big ass rez (5-7gal range easily accommodated) and those were loaded with coco before but I'll refresh with all new medium.

The big challenges I see I need to sort out are:

-- When the rez gets too much drainage/waste water I'll need a way to pump things out; Easy enough -> I have my fill pipe I can route tubing/electrical cord out of and drop a small 100gph pump in each... This would also make it way way easier to flush as needed (either for the bed/medium or to flush the rez itself periodically).

-- Anaerobic. No air pump... That's usually an issue so I'm trying to figure out how the hempy crowd deals with that. For the SIPs I've used EM-1 mainly and have some needing used up anyhow.

-- What about bios? Mycos, Bennies & the likes. I know biochar helps on this front as well but if running synthetics is there any point? As I've learned from early on these are really for the organics/soil crowd but I know some hydro usage still applies. Wasn't sure about the hempy world's point of view on them - time to read more threads.'

-- Top feeding vs sub-surface feeding; I don't want gnats or to make an environment that mites would love. I have SouthernAg bio fungicide I use to help with that as a preventative move.

So if you were to do a variant of the hempy where just a wick drops down to the rez but otherwise is using coco (not vermiculite/perlite) should I expect to see similar outcomes/challenges? What would you do if you were to try and run some hybrid variant like I'm describing?

But since you have knowledge with earth box can I run FFOF as my soil?

I understand the medium's role is more of anchor and just carrier for nutes/water, but in my case any residual 'runoff' would end up wicking back up being the biggest difference. As for can you use FFOF I'd say sure, but the common theme I see with it is that it runs out of oooomph towards then end. So amending it for the long-haul or planning to top-dress/amend midway would probably be needed.

I used a homebrew soil mix that seems to make it all the way through but it's been recycled a few times/amended and let to cook multiple times. Hopefully getting better each run. If I was starting from scratch I'd look at both FFOF and Nectar's soils like #4 & #8 as maybe a better starting point. A lot of people shit on FFOF but I'm of the opinion it's what you make of it and know what you're working with. I'd definitely say check out the NFTG stuff though if you can get it locally.

My main curiosity with this is that when it comes to these super soils, water-only mixes, etc is that it's hard to get down to a repeatable exercise. Each batch/run will vary based on how much of the nutes in it were consumed and how much you add back when recycling and then how available it is.

Truth be told if I didn't have nutes to use up I probably wouldn't be screwing with this, but it's also a for-shits-and-giggle type of effort. Why not see what I can do with something that isn't already well established. I grow for personal use only and stash is good for a minute so even if this goes south I can tolerate it for 1 run. ;-)

Yeah just starting back up
Have done soil and hempy and outdoors
Been out of it for for 5 years
Staying indoors for a year because the laws in Michigan are so screwed up right now
