Do the dead fan leaves make good fertilizer?

I've been leaving the dead fan leaves from my plants in the pots for a while, figuring that they would make a good compost in the end. Considering that soil is made up of dead plant matter, am I wrong?

You could make compost out of the leaves that is the only way. The way your doing it just letting it fall and sit on your soil surface is just asking for pest and mold problems
