I've got the 6" inline and with no speed controller the thing sounds like a jet engine.
I ended up buying a variable speed controller, and just turned it down maybe 1/32" it really didn't lose much cfm and is very quiet now

thats a good idea. Thanks. Where could I get a cheap one and how hard are they to install on one of these?

The one I got cost about $29.99 and its very easy to install, basically plug your fan into the controller, then controller into power supply!
