Xcel Energy Announces 2-tier Rates

In a process to encourage customers to cut down on power consumption during summer, Xcel Energy (XEL - Analyst Report) launched a two-tiered rate plan. The new plan will increase the summer monthly bills of an average residential consumer by 2.5%.

Xcel Energy formulated this two-tier plan to reduce power consumption during the summer months when energy costs are at peak level. The two-tiered rate plan will be effective from June 1 and will continue till September.

To incentivize customers, who consume less energy in summer, the company has introduced a new rate plan by which it will charge 9.8 cents per kilowatt hour for the first 500-kilowatt hours and 14 cents per kilowatt hour for use above the stipulated 500 kilowatt hours. Xcel noted that the average residential customer, who is using about 632 kilowatt per month, will now pay $75 under the new plan, which is a 2.5% increase from the present single-tier system.

During the first-quarter earnings call, Xcel Energy reaffirmed adjusted earnings guidance range of $1.55 to $1.65 per share for the fiscal year. The company considered the weather factor and assumed normal weather pattern for the full year. Xcel assumed weather-adjusted retail electric utility sales increased approximately 1% year over year and weather-adjusted retail firm natural gas sales were up to 1% on a yearly basis.

time to go solar or wind powered for the grow op (plus you get kick backs for feeding the grid with excess.

Doesn't matter. They have economists plotting the curve. They'd probably lose money at 7% stolen so they had to lower the price just a hair. :)

I just calculated approx. what your lights cost to run with the above figures.

1000w x 12 hrs x 30days = 360kwh
plus
400w x 18hrs x 30days = 216kwh

So
360 + 216 = 576 total kwh for lights.

from above post first 500kwh @ 9.8 cents = .098
above 500kwh @ 14 cents = .14

So
500kwh x .098 = $49.00
and
76kwh x .14 = $10.64
So your lights use approx. $59.64 per month

For some reason my electrical bill comes from Fort Collins Utilities, which is WAY CHEAPER than what you guys are posting. I pay XCel for gas, which runs the dryer, heater, water heater, stove. I pay probably $40 a month to excel and $40 to Utilities, while running tons of fans, cfls, AND a 1000w HPS. Screw you Excel! I might just stay in Fort Collins after hearing this!

cheaper to go with a generator(lease so you don't have to fix) that uses natural gas or delivered propane than to go solar or wind. obviously not as friendly, but still helps offset gouging by excel and oil consumption. also more reliable for steady electricity. you are best off using the power you make cause if you don't, you sell it to excel for wholesale and buy it back when you use it at full price(they seriously screw you!)

Buddyjesus1,

It is not cheaper to use a generator - what Excel charges is not even close to the cost of running a generator.
