I believe a hygrometer is just an instrument that measures relative humidity. Growers use them while drying to ensure a consistent humidity level, if the humidity was off (not sure of the exact % at which nug will dry/cure the best) then it could begin to grow mold/mildew.

So you just throw it into the jars with the buds.. and every time it gets to 45% or 50% then you go ahead and burp the jars correct?

I do just because I live on the water... If I have a lot I will vacuum seal but even still I find myself opening it after a month.

found my temp/hygrometer @ wal mart for around $10. one of the best purchases ever. runs on 2 AAA bats, small, accurate, and stores HIGH and LOW for both temp and humidity.
And the best advice I can give is: let the plant tell you when its done. dont read too much into specifics as far as actual numbers go. if the buds are too moist, burp them. if not, let them be. when they're done....they're done!

No matter how experienced, there's always new techniques and methods that people are applying everyday. Anybody can have a question, your not doing it right if you have never asked a question before. it makes sense to use one in the jar or whatever you are curing in. i haven't ever done it or even heard of doing this but it could be a useful thing. like you were saying take it out when humidity is at the highest, burp the jar and dry it out and do it again. simple cure. its a good idea.

I have a few of those, Accurite I believe right? They are terrible compared to my $30 one. Sometimes the walmart one read 36% while the expensive one reads 49%, and sometimes it will read high too if any water or mist is within inches of it. I have seen readings 10-15% lower, and 10% higher with that walmart one. They are great for getting a rough idea, but not that great for fine tuning.
