Fabric pots the cure for clogged drains?

I've been trying to come up with a solution to the age old problem of roots and/or media clogging up the drains on my Hempy buckets, but I know it's an issue all hydro growers can run into.

I was wondering if anyone had ever tried making a "filter" cap from the material of a fabric pot to place over the inlet for the drainage to keep roots/media from clogging the pipes/hoses?

I figure they're made for the purpose of allowing runoff to pass through pretty much unimpeded, and should last quite a while without deteriorating. "If" it worked...

I know it will slow draining for drain to waste hydro, along with slowing transfer between buckets on Rdwc, but I would guess, without testing, that the impact should be negligible.

Anyway,
I was wondering if anyone has tried it and could give an opinion, or if maybe I should just start cutting a fabric bag tomorrow for "test purposes"...
Suggestions?

I've never tried using cloth. Using mosquitoe netting over my hempy bucket drain holes. Superglue ftw.
In my final weeks and no clogging.

Screens will stop media, trash etc from going through the drains - until they clog up - but nothing will stop roots. If water can get through the screen, roots can get through the screen.
