First grow, BIG temp issue with my CFL's

First I would like to thank for a good forum, I've been reading it for a while but this is my first own post (in any CB-related forum).

About a year ago I got the brilliant idea of growing my own green. Unfortunately I didn't have a good space to use but a few months ago when I got my new apartment I thought I'd found the perfect spot for a stealthy grow.

During the last couple of weeks I have been doing research and benchmarking on different gear that I was gonna use. And I have been drilling, painting etc. just to make everything ready for my grow room. Just when i thought everything was finished and im awaiting my seeds in the mail, i decided to try to measure the humidity and temperature in the room.

Since I didn't have any good ventilation possibilities for the grow room, i'd decided to go with one 2700/6400K (one each) 200W LE light. The brand is Envirolites with built in ballast.

My grow room has the dimensions (height x width x depth):
80 x 65 x 40 (centimetres)
31.5" x 25.6" x 15.7" (inches)

So, I started my light and put the thermometer on the edge of the pots (as I thought there's where the plants will be).

The initial temperature was 73 degrees Fahrenheit (22.8 celsius), then it developed like this:
10 min: 81 degrees (27.2 celsius)
20 min: 85.6 degrees (29.8 celsius)
30 min: 91.22 degrees (32.9 celsius)
40 min: 94 degrees (34.7 celsius)
50 min: 96 degrees (35.8 celsius)
60 min: 98 degrees (36.5 celsius)

I continued measuring and after aprox 8 hours it seemed to stabilize on 109 degrees (43 celsius) (!!!!!!!!!!)

Here's a picture of my growing room:

I know its a small room (the light can be brought up higher), but i wanted a stealthy growing room. I measured I have aprox 40-50 cm for the plants. I'm planning to grow lowryders / trying some LST-strategy/cutting down/bending the plants.

So, to my question.

Obviously I have a huge temperature problem and I was looking for some advice on how to fix it. One issue is that the grow space is in a cabinet space that is located next to the ceiling in the room. There is no way to create an outflow at the top of the room (except if i drilled a hole in the front panel, which would not be very stealthy). The only way new air can enter the room is from underneath, where there is another cabinet space. The openings to the room underneath is two x 1/4 inch "stripes" that located along the width of the room (the 25.6 inch-length).

I measured the temp in the cabinet beneath and noticed that the temp had not increased there, so obviously no heat is transferred between the two cabinet spaces (logical i guess since warm air moves upwards). Is there a smart way that i could get an inflow from underneath (through the small slots), or, rather blow out the warm air downwards? Or is this problem unsolvable without an exhaust in the top of the growing space? Can I use ice?

I was thinking about getting an ordinary oscillating fan to circulate the air in the room, and maybe i could cool off the plants just underneath the lamp. But i don think it will be sufficient. I also decided to remove the plastic sheets on the wall (the walls underneath is white anyway) as I figured the stone and tree walls inside the space maybe had better thermal conductivity . I'm measuring right now to see if it makes any difference.

Do you have any advice for me on how to cool things down? Should I just forget growing in this space? Im feeling a little desolated now after all the work with the room, and now this... Any advice is appreciated.

Hey man, Your grow room looks alright for the vegetative stage of growing. Was that the temperature with the light on? If so, I think because of the size of your grow space it would be reasonable to switch to smaller cfls that can be put within one inch on the plant. That could help with the temperature issue. Also a fan is definitly a good way to decrease temperature and is good for stem growth. If you made two holes on the top and bottom of the door to your grow box and put an incoming fan for fresh air on the bottom, and an out blowing fan for extraction, you should be alright. Otherwise you are making a sort of oven without ventilation, not good for the plants. Let us know how things go!

Hey

Yes the lights were on, the temperatures i posted was the increase with time.
I guess I have to consider switching to smaller CFLs, just feels a bit sad when i just bought the these 2 clfs and a reflector. Im trying again now without the plastic sheets and i put the thermometer in the bottom corner of the room/ i figured this is somehow similar to what i can get if i use a fan blowing just beneath the lamp. It stops on 96 which is a little lower but I guess i still need to go down.

Thanks for answering

is this the only place u can grow ur plants?the growrooms way too small....just like palmer said use smaller cfl bulbs if this is the only place u can grow. but ive gone out of my way and even took my clothes out of my wardrobe and using that for a growroom and i have up to 6 cfls and a flourescent light and only reaches temps of 75 farenhiet which is perfect.......just a idea for those who cant really afford making a growbox.......... use a wardrobe lol........:fire:

Just find a bigger place for when they are flowering, like i said you'll be fine to veg the plants in that room(it actually looks perfect for 2-4 plants). Also, you can use the bigger cfls when flowering so no need to feel bad about buying them. How much did you pay for those bad boys anyways? whered you buy em? I need to find some higher watt cfls for flowering.

mrbud2010: Yes other people have told me that too. I know it might be an issue but I was hoping it would work if I just grew some low-height-AFs. I know it doest give a great yield but thats fine with me. I have a wardrobe but it would be a problem to get my power supply in there.

Ill try to think of a bigger place to flower.

Palmer: I payed ~150 USD for the 2 lamps and the reflector. I didnt buy them in the US though (I live in europe) so I guess it wouldnt be useful to know where i got them ;-)

Hi mates just wanted to pop in and thank you for your advice...

I got the temp down a bit now. I drilled a hole and added and exhaust fan in the top of the cabin. Night temp is now 75 (lights off), day temp with lights on ~86.

I know its still a bit high but I read here that higher temp requires more CO2 so I'm trying to add some extra of that too (jeast + sugar => CO2).

I germinated my first 4 CB seeds (Lowryder #1) last friday. 30 hours later I planted then in some soil and now they are all standing 1 inch tall

I still havent found a good room for flowering but ive managed to attach the lamp closer to the ceiling. I pray that some epic LST will take care of my problems :blsmoke:

Cheers

Sounds like you are on your way. Im thinking about doing some AF growing myself, let me know what you end up yielding.
