first time trying to grow

Yea, definitely read the GROW FAQ and read some more then more and then some more....more...more.

Experiment around with it and you will get it down.

But to semi answer some of your questions:

If you got the money, go with a MH and HPS setup. MH for veg and HPS for flower. If you don't have the money, run down to your local hardware store and pick up some CFL'S. Get at least 2 CFL'S @ 27 watts each (100 watt equivalent) for every plant - at least this!

For soil, try getting some Scott's potting soil and mix in some peat poss and perlite.

And for your growing area, how bout your closet?

Oh yea, don't forget to look for a PH test kit for your water. Don't worry about nutes just yet. Use bottled water, if you can't afford that, roll with your tap water, but let it sit out for 24 hours before using. Never use cold water on your plants.
