It's OK to wait for nutes and no you don't need to do a dark period before you switch.

I always start my plants day @ 7am, so at first I go from 7-1. Then when it's time to go to flower, I switch my bulb and go from 7-7.

if you are worried about size, look into LST. tie down some tops and save your room....if you topped your plants....

In my limited experience I think it is better to continue giving veg nutes through the stretch.

Flush and switch to flower nutes when the buds actually appear, but not when the preflowers appear.

In my first grow I switched to bloom nutes when the preflowers appeared and that's when all the leaves started yellowing early and things went down the shitdrain.

I think it's cus the stretching phase is still part of the veg phase so they still need nitrogen or a mix of veg & bloom.
That's from my limited experience though, someone else should chime in.
