From Hydro to Organics - Grow Prep

Hello everyone, long time soilless grower here(inspired by SCOTTYBALLS back in the day) looking to make the switch to organics in search of a better overall harvest. It always seemed like all the best bud (taste and smell wise) I’ve ever smoked has been in soil/organics and it’s time I gave it a shot. My preferred method of growing has always been with a GH Waterfarm and it’s line of nutrients; I’ve always had success with them but I was getting a little tired of the “high maintenance” of soilless grows. I’m a perfectionist at heart so dealing with soilless mediums I was spending most of my time attending to the grow. Now I’m older, bit wiser, and extremely busier than I was before when I could dedicate all the time I needed for my grow, so I figured its time to simplify things a bit and at the same time try and produce tastier, smellier buds.

It’s been a while since i’ve grown so I had to start my grow space from scratch again. I’m preparing a h50’’ x w36’’ x d18.5’’ space, enough for one plant, under a screen, and will be performing the SCROG method as I usually do. I will be using the Hortibloom MEGA 150w LED grow bar light along with all the usual bells and whistles; carbon filter, inline fan, reflective mylar, etc, etc.

The setup is basically the same until we reach the medium. I will be growing in a 3 gal container; not sure if smart pot or air pot for better aeration, i’ll let the pros here comment accordingly. I don’t think I need more than 3 gal and I want to keep my lady as short as possible as I don’t have a whole lot of vertical space. Besides, I plan to run an Autoflower on my first organic at bat and I don’t think they really need more than 3 gal anyway. I figure if I can get her to SCROG I can keep a nice canopy at a proper distance from the light without her getting too unruly. I’m shooting more for quality than quantity this time around.

So about the medium. Here’s what i got so far. Any suggestions and/or critique is highly welcomed.

Soil Base:
-FoxFarm Ocean Forrest
-Wiggle Worm EWC
-Mycorrhizae Great white
-Espoma Organic Perlite

Nutritional Amendments:
-Espoma Tomato tone Organic Fertilizer 3-5-6
-Espoma kelp meal 1-0-2

Mineral Amendments:
-Azomite Rock Dust Volcanic Ash

I plan to mix all these up about 3-4 weeks before I start my grow to allow the microbes to begin to break down the amendments and convert the nutrients into a form that the plant can use. After this time I will place my seed directly in the medium where it will live from seed to harvest; I’ve had great success germinating seeds in soil before so it shouldn’t be a problem. I also want to do it this way because i’ve heard autoflowers are finicky about transplants and too much stress.

Questions I have so far:
  1. At what proportions do you mix the soil base ingredients with the nutritional and mineral amendments for a 3 gal pot ?
  2. Can you mix for more than for a 3 gal pot and save the rest for a later grow?
  3. Would there be any more “feedings” during the rest of the grow using this formula and if so what would it be?
  4. With organics how do we control the ph of the medium? Will this formula help keep the ph under 7.0? What organics could be used to lower ph if it gets too high?
Any tips, pointers, comments, critiques, and even insults are welcome.

Thanks for reading!
