What up RIU?!
I'm starting a breeding project that I'm excited about so I thought I'd document my progress here. I'm working out of a 2.5' x 8' tent with two 330 watt DIY Growcraft x3's. I grow organically in soil using dry amendments.
I've got a lot of ideas for different breeding projects but to really start things off right, I'm going to develop an inbred line to use as the basis for future projects. Ideally this IBL will be an apically dominant, autoflowering (I know, I know) strain amenable to sea of green style grows. Ideally it will be a really fast strain with a lifecycle of 9-10 weeks max and capable of producing at least an oz per plant. Obviously it should be as potent as possible and produce an appealing terp profile but honestly these are traits that I anticipate really dialing in during phase 2 of this project in a few years.
So where am I at? This past Summer I pollinated an auto Stardawg and a Tangie'matic with pollen from a photoperiod sensitive Critical Mass. I had a few males to choose from so I chose the most vigorous male which also happened to have the sweetest terp profile as assessed by the ole finger rub test. I only had one female Stardawg and one female Tangie'matic. Grew them both outside on a sunny porch. The Stardawg was really a pretty plant. Grew to about 4' tall and had compact gassy scented buds. The Tangie'matic had some super resinous bud that smelled of straight citrus but took on a super fox tailed structure, which I'm not a huge fan of. Easily a few thousand dark healthy seeds from each cross.
Now that my latest indoor grow has wrapped up, I have the opportunity to crack a few of these seeds. It was a tough choice but I've decided to plant only the CM x Stardawg seeds. I feel the need to screen as many plants as possible so I ruled out planting seeds from both crosses. I chose the Stardawg cross because the mother was a great plant and the Stardawg bud that I've smoked has given me a really unique buzz that I've enjoyed.
A few days ago I planted 80 seeds, two in each location that will house a plant. These are obviously regular seeds so half will be males and half females, so I'll have 20 of each to screen...a pretty meager phenohunt but the best I can do. Its gonna be real tight in my tent and I anticipate quite the shit show. Not exactly sure how I will handle pollen containment or training at this point but I am planning to keep the veg period real short, probably 4 weeks max, to try to keep some semblance of sanity.
Both males and females will be selected primarily on overall structure with my preference being apically dominant or non-branchy plants. This is an F1 population resulting from the cross of a photoperiod sensitive plant and an autoflowering plant so all plants should be photoperiod sensitive. Critical Mass is a great example of a true F1 hybrid because the parents are distantly related (think different land race strains). My pack came from Mr. Nice. Shout out Mr. Nice. This also means that despite the fact that I'm labelling this as an F1 cross, I expect quite a bit of phenotypic variation in this population, because the Critical Mass alleles were all segregating into different little pollen grains. The Stardawg mother may or may not have been an inbred line so it could have been segregating alleles as well, but I have less information about this strain.
Let the madness begin.
