Can i use cat litter for drainage at the bottom of my pots instead of gravel/stones? My seeds are finished germinating and i forgot to buy drainage for my pots!! havent got the time! plus rep!!! What about using perlite at the bottom aswell as mixed with my soil?

its made from clay .. will pack way too tight and go like mud .. not very good for drainage

Thanks for the quick reply! Ahhh man thats a bummer! Have you any ideas? Would i be better off having nothing at the bottom as i know perlite absorbs water......

i never put anything in the bottom of my pails . sit them on a plate or tray , raise them up so the excess water will drain onto the tray .. you dont want the plants roots to stay wet

Does anyone think that i would be better off having no drainage at the minute(As nowere is open and my popped seeds wont last untill tommorow) and slide the plant out in 2-3 weeks and put stones in when it has some structure?)

I take it you havent had problems without using drainage at the bottom of your plants then? Good info!

you got to have someway to drain excess water , well unless your going dwc or hydro ..

nope never a prob well unless i put way too much water in .. then i gotta mop lol

If you need something quick gravel for a fish tank has always worked for me, but like tellno1 said you have to have drainage. I used 2 5 gallon buckets, I used a 3/4 inch spade drill bit and bored 4 holes in the bottom of one bucket and then placed it inside the other bucket. The bottom bucket caught oall the excess adn made it easy to dispose of just pull the one out and dump the other then place them back.

I have a crapton of crushed rock, so I threw a bunch of that in the bottom of my container along with drilling lots of holes

just get some perlite you can buy it in any garden center .. having good drainage in your pots will help your plants to grow faster and avoid root rot etc its worth it

grab a few bags of cheap aquarium gravel...you can even get kewl colors lol
