A year of hempy trials and I found a weird trick.
Don't know what else to say about this "hempy" method except that I feel like an idiot for not doing it sooner. Talk about a no brainer and saving TONS of $$$$$ on nutes/electric its a joke. I'm running just over/under 1 <<< that's 1 liter of AN per run on all nutes full lineup each (8-9 weeks). Running 12 Platinum OG x Bubba Kush and it has been simply unreal/unbelievable. At first I thought there's no way in hell this will work. Bottom of bucket water will get to 78+ degrees, root rot etc etc... yea... somehow.. I don't know why, but it just works! No need for hygrozyme, air stones, pumps, chiller it's ridiculous. All the electric $ saved on the chiller alone is just stupid.
Was doing typical 4" rock wool x 4x8' table x slabs FnD blah blah with pain in the ass rw slabs to clean up at the end every time etc. Switched to 3 gallon hempy buckets with 1/2" holes 2" up from bottom and haven't looked back. Once the tap root hits the (so called) "over-heated" rez it's a joke. Insane growth. I mean insane. Goes against many things in the horticulture world I guess (so I hear) but damn it just works.
Oh the "trick" yea.... the reason I posted this to begin with sorry kinda atm.
The trick is forget the vermiculite and screw the root plug transplant cutting off the bottom of cole cup thing. Its all a load of time wasting crap imo. I did many trials and learned/watched this fail or be sub par at the end (same strain/DNA). The trick is to transplant 1x1 rw cubed clones into into 4x4" rockwool cubes (obviously let em veg a week or two) and transplant those into straight perlite sitting in the 3gal buckets and continue to veg. Don't know exactly what's going on here but from doing it this way with the 4x4s I've gone to a gpw dry every time or just over that. When I did the plug method I never hit a gpw. To be super sure even after hitting a gpw with the 4x4" cubes in 3gal buckets I went back and did one last run with the cole cup plugs (with brand (same exact lights) new HPS x2) in same buckets/conditions/nutes and did not hit a gpw.
Another weird thing is on FnD tables I always got at least a tiny bit of (nute) leaf tip burn from using AN. Nothing crazy but slightly obvious. And when using the plugs in hempy system I also got a tiny bit of leaf tip burn from AN. But when I switched to a 4x4" cube sitting in the perlite hempy I get 0.000000 leaf tip burn! I have no idea why, just reporting what I've seen over many runs.
Bottom line:
On FnD tables with 70gal rez over 9 weeks I was using four times (and 10 times on certain nutes like voodoo etc) the amount of nutes and flushing them down the toilet every week.
My electric has gone down 25% from chucking chiller, pumps etc etc etc etc.
With the hempys I was able to keep humidity more easily under control in my situation with no 70 gal rez sitting under 4x8' table making hum matters even worse at lights out than normal.
And I get way more more more dry product! It's ridiculous. On old method I'd hit high EC and ppms 1100 during weeks 4,5,6,7 and now with hempy I never go over 500-600 ppm but I get more gpw! Thats right, way less nutes but more product!
Hempy wherever you are THANK YOU! I'm saving nearly $1,000 on nutes and electric per run and at the same time getting much MORE product.
That is all
